Top Gun 3 on the Horizon? Miles Teller Reveals Exciting New Details!

Top Gun 3 gets a hopeful new update from Miles Teller, who shares what Tom Cruise has told him about the sequel. Coming 36 years after the original Tony Scott film, Joseph Kosinski’s sequel hit movie theaters in 2022, featuring Cruise returning as Maverick to train a new batch of recruits, including Teller’s Rooster, Goose’s son, for a dangerous mission. The film was massive hit critically and commercially and Top Gun 3 development was subsequently confirmed, but few concrete updates have emerged on the project since.

During a recent interview with Collider, Teller speaks briefly about Top Gun 3, revealing that he has spoken to Cruise about it. Though the actor doesn’t seem to know anything about the status of the script, he does stress that there’s a great deal of enthusiasm to see the sequel get made. Check out Teller’s comment below:

“We’ll see what happens. All I know is that Tom has said that, since he’s the first to know, he’ll give me enough time to get back into Top Gun shape. And that’s all I asked. But there’s a lot of excitement at both ends, from the fans and from the Top Gun team.”

What Teller’s Update Means For Top Gun 3

Currently, Top Gun 3 is in the script stage. The biggest update regarding the sequel arrived earlier this year when franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Screen Rant that “We spent time with [Tom Cruise]. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and [Cruise] said I really like that, so we’re developing it.” The producer does stress, however, that Cruise has a very busy schedule, so it could be a while before Top Gun 3 moves forward.

As for Teller’s update, the reveal that Cruise stressed that Teller would have time to get back into “Top Gun shape” suggests that the practical filmmaking methods that contributed to Top Gun: Maverick‘s stellar reviews will be returning. Cruise, Teller, and the rest of the actors playing pilots all went up in real fighter jets to film many of the action sequences, and doing this required the actors to participate in “Tom Cruise Boot Camp” prior to production. Before another movie happens, it sounds like the actors will be getting back up into the air for some practice.

Our Take On Teller’s Top Gun 3 Update

Practical Aerial Action Was Crucial To Maverick’s Success

Though there’s still not much to go on with Top Gun 3, a return to the practical filmmaking methods used to make Maverick is a positive sign. The large role that VFX played in the sequel should, of course, be recognized, but the Top Gun: Maverick castfilming in real fighter jets made the action sequences breathtaking to behold, especially in a movie theater.

Cruise is now 62 years old, and with his current slate of movies on the horizon, which includes films with Alejandro González Iñárritu and Doug Liman, it could be a year or two before Top Gun 3 even goes into production. At this point, a release in 2028 or 2029 seems possible, but that also depends on whether a strong enough script can be written. A great many questions remain about Top Gun 3, but it’s clear that a number of key figures involved are keen on bringing another aerial adventure to the big screen.
