Oscar-winning director Ang Lee is hoping that his next film will be his planned Bruce Lee biopic.

In 2022, it was announced that Hulk director Ang Lee, who also won an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain and helmed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, was developing a new film about Bruce Lee. It was also reported that the director’s son, Mason Lee, would be playing Bruce. Per Variety, Ang Lee shared a new update on the film, commenting on how it’s film he’s spent a very long time perfecting with the script. With that said, he’s hoping to make this movie “soon,” given that both he and his son are not getting any younger.

It took me years to think of a way to crack it, to connect to it,” Lee said, further addressing how he related to the other Lee. “Character-wise, I couldn’t be more different from Bruce Lee but there are aspects I relate to. He had identity issues; he was aways yearning to belong, to find his place. That really speaks to me. Neither of us are getting any younger. So I hope I get to make this movie soon.”

Ang Lee Was Compelled to Tell Bruce Lee’s Story

“Accepted as neither fully American nor fully Chinese, Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese Kung Fu to the world, a scientist of combat and an iconic performing artist who revolutionized both the martial arts and action cinema,” Ang Lee previously said of the biopic when it was first announced, per Deadline. “I feel compelled to tell the story of this brilliant, unique human being who yearned for belonging, possessed tremendous power in a 135-pound-frame, and who, through tireless hard work, made impossible dreams into reality.”

It was previously reported that Bruce Lee’s daughter, Shannon Lee, would be serving as a producer on the film. This will not be the first biopic about her late father she was involved with. In 1993, Jason Scott Lee played Bruce Lee in the biopic Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, which was directed by Rob Cohen. Shannon had a small cameo appearance in the film, which was released just weeks after the tragic death of Brandon Lee – Bruce’s son and Shannon’s brother. The biopic was dedicated to Brandon, and Shannon recently addressed the 31st anniversary of The Crow star’s passing.

It’s not yet clear when the new Bruce Lee biopic will be released.
