Keep your eyes on Asher HaVon, a singer from Alabama who’s competing on “The Voice” in Season 25.
HaVon, 31, a Selma native, dazzled the coaches on Monday’s episode of the NBC reality series, winning his Battle Round with teammate Alyssa Crosby. The two, who are competing on Reba McEntire’s team, performed a duet to “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome).”
In the “Voice” Battles, singers perform duets with other contestants on their teams, vying to keep their spots on the show. Their coaches prepare them for the Battle Rounds, choosing the songs and making the final decisions on who stays and who goes.
“We Don’t Need Another Hero,” a 1985 hit for Tina Turner, also was featured on the soundtrack of ”Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.” It proved to be a perfect fit for HaVon, showing his skills and vocal range. All of the coaches on the show — McEntire, John Legend, Chance the Rapper and Dan & Shay — offered praise to HaVon, tossing superlatives his way like flowers in a kudos bouquet.
“Great job! Asher, your tone is incredible,” Chance said. “Your control is incredible. … I’m leaning towards Asher. I think he’s going to do amazing things on the show.”
“Asher, that was insane, dude,” said Dan Smyers of Dan & Shay. “Just your range, your dynamics, some of that lower stuff. I was blown away by it.”
“Asher, you sang flawlessly,” Legend said. “Your runs were amazing. Your range is crazy. Reba should be very proud.”
“Your voice is wonderful,” McEntire agreed. “Round, full, makes you feel like a nice, cozy blanket that you’re being wrapped up in. … After all the advice from the other coaches, the winner of this Battle is Asher.”

“I had to choose Asher,” McEntire explained, “His voice is incredible, his style, stage presence, he’s got the whole package. Asher’s got a good chance of winning.”
HaVon has a long way to go before the “Voice” finals, but he’s one step closer after triumphing during his Battle Round. He now moves to a phase of the competition known as the Knockouts, choosing a song to perform as a solo artist in a head-to-head contest with another teammate.
“I am overly happy I done won this Battle,” HaVon said on Monday’s episode. “I’ve been working so hard, and I’m glad I’m still here.”
His teammate, Crosby, didn’t have to bemoan her loss for long. Chance quickly scooped her up for his team, using a “Voice” twist known as “steal.” (Each coach has the ability to steal one singer who’s about to be eliminated during the Battles, saving that person from elimination.)
“This moment was such a thrill,” HaVon said via Instagram. “I had the opportunity to sing a Tina Turner song with a true artist and talent! We brought the house down! Thank you @alyssacrosbysings for being such a wonderful partner and thank you @reba for believing in me!! I won the battle!!! I’m so excited!! So much more to come!!!”
HaVon is one of five Alabama singers competing on “The Voice” this season, and the first to be featured during the current Battle Rounds. Alabama has a presence on all four teams during Season 25, with HaVon on Team Reba, Val T Webb of Birmingham on Team Chance, Ducote Talmage of Auburn on Team Dan & Shay, Rivers Grayson of Muscle Shoals on Team Legend and Corey Curtis, a Saraland resident, on Team Chance.
Look for them on “The Voice” as the Battle Rounds continue over the next few episodes. “The Voice” features five stages of competition: Blind Auditions, Battle Rounds, Knockouts, Playoffs and live performance shows. Early episodes of each season are filmed in advance.
Alabama’s never had a winner on “The Voice” during its 13-year history on television. However, more than 30 contestants from the state have made their marks on the show over the years, starting with Nakia Reynoso in Season 1 and continuing through spring 2023 with four Alabama singers moving through the competition in Season 23.
D. Smooth, an R&B singer from Birmingham, took third place on “The Voice” during the Season 23 finals in May 2023. Three other Alabama contestants — Ryley Tate Wilson, Jerome Godwin III and JB Somers — were eliminated earlier in the season.
