With the New Orleans Saints reportedly zeroing in on Kellen Moore as their next head coach, Kansas City Chiefs fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The last remaining head coaching vacancy in the NFL appears to be closing, and that means defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is staying put in Kansas City for at least another season.

This bit of specific news is indirect, since Spags never once interviewed for the New Orleans job. Still, he did earn three previous looks from teams this offseason—the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Jets—and after successive Super Bowl runs anchored by a stout defense, it felt like it was going to be Spagnuolo’s year, if it was ever going to happen again.

If no one wants to interupt the Chiefs’ run of success, we’re not complaining.

Spagnuolo has been an integral part of the Chiefs’ sustained success over the past five seasons, after transforming the defense into one of the league’s best units annually. While head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes rightfully garner much of the spotlight, Spags’ defense has served as an anchor in securing annual trips to the AFC Championship game and beyond. His aggressive and versatile schemes, ability to develop young players, and knack for dialing up pressure in critical moments have made him invaluable to Kansas City’s championship formula.

Spagnuolo has already served as an NFL head coach with the St. Louis Rams—yes, it was that long ago—from 2009 to 2011 where he went 10-38 in three seasons. The Rams, however, were riding the Sam Bradford experiment at the time with leading receivers like Danny Amendola and Brandon Lloyd. The talent pool was incredibly shallow.

There’s always the possibility that Spagnuolo gets hired by a team next year. The Chiefs will be a contender—even a favorite—for the next several NFL seasons, but it’s hard to imagine anyone’s stock could ever be higher than when chasing a three-peat. Each passing year means Spags is another year older as well, and the Chiefs defensive coordinator is already 65.

That won’t stop Andy Reid from beating the drum for his DC—as he should—and smart teams will still inquire going forward. If Pete Carroll can still get a new job (Raiders) as someone eight years older than Spagnuolo, nothing is set in stone.

For now, however, Chiefs Kingdom can breathe easy knowing the NFL’s head coaching carousel is nearly done spinning and the Chiefs’ coaching staff remains mostly intact at the highest levels. Some assistants might still be poached as these head coaches round out their staffs, but no one seems to want to interrupt the Chiefs’ sustained success. Go figure.
