Jonathan Bailey was missing at the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards despite his multiple nominations.
The actor, who was up for three awards at the Feb. 23 show, was not in attendance with his Wicked or Bridgerton costars as he was busy taking another stage across the pond.
Bailey, 36, is currently starring in Richard II at the Bridge Theater in London and, therefore, was not able to attend the ceremony.
He was still honored, though, for his various nominations, which included outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role for Wicked, outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture for Wicked and outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series for Bridgerton.
Many of his costars were in attendance at the show, including Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, both of whom were also nominated for their roles in the Wizard of Oz prequel film, along with Nicola Coughlan, Luke Newton and several other Bridgerton stars.

Jonathan Bailey Draws Inspiration from Succession’s Logan Roy for His Role in Richard II
Renowned actor Jonathan Bailey is currently balancing a full schedule, from starring in the historical play Richard II to his highly anticipated role in the upcoming Wicked adaptation. But despite his busy workload, there are fascinating connections between his latest projects and his recent award nominations.
In a recent interview with the BBC, Bailey revealed that he drew inspiration from Succession’s Logan Roy (played by Brian Cox) and his children while preparing for his role as King Richard II. The Shakespearean tragedy delves into themes of inherited power, political downfall, and leadership struggles, all of which parallel the intense family drama and corporate power plays seen in Succession.
“I channeled many Roys,” Bailey shared. Richard II explores inherited power in a very similar way to Succession, but also expands on it and takes it to a new level.”
Bailey’s portrayal of the doomed king has been met with critical acclaim, with audiences praising his ability to blend historical gravitas with modern relevance. His performance in Richard II is scheduled to run through May 10, giving fans ample opportunity to witness his interpretation of the complex monarch.
A Return to His Theater Roots
While Bailey has become a household name through his roles in television and film, returning to the stage has been a deeply personal and fulfilling experience.
“Being back onstage is making me so happy,” he expressed. I feel like I’m able to inspire a new generation of young people coming to the theater.
For Bailey, the impact of live theater extends far beyond his own performance. He hopes that his portrayal in Richard II will introduce Shakespeare to new audiences and foster a deeper appreciation for classical theater.
“If 10 people per show come and see Shakespeare for the first time, then I’m doing something right,” he told the outlet.
His passion for theater is evident, and it’s clear that his stage work remains a cornerstone of his artistic journey.
Theater Influence on Wicked and His Bond with Ariana Grande
Bailey’s theatrical background has also played a key role in his work on the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked, where he stars alongside Ariana Grande. The two actors, both with strong musical theater roots, quickly bonded during production.
In a joint interview with PEOPLE, Grande reminisced about their shared love of theater and the fun they had behind the scenes.
“I feel like we were both very theater children in the room,” Grande shared. And we were very giggly together. That was the tough thing with us. We were the giggliest pair.
Their chemistry on and off screen has only added to the excitement surrounding Bailey’s portrayal of Fiyero in Wicked. With the film’s first part set to release in November 2024, fans are eager to see how his stage-honed skills translate to the big screen.
A Rising Star with Deep Theatrical Roots
From his award-winning performances on television to his commanding stage presence, Jonathan Bailey continues to prove himself as one of the most dynamic actors of his generation. Whether he’s channeling the power struggles of Succession in Richard II or bringing a beloved musical character to life in Wicked, his dedication to the craft remains unwavering.
As Bailey continues his run in Richard II and gears up for the release of Wicked, it’s clear that his theatrical background and love for storytelling will only further cement his place as a leading force in the entertainment industry.

Bailey agreed as he said he and Grande were “incessant” on set — but, she felt like their shared energy “carbonated our chemistry.” He added: “It gave us fizz.”
