The live-action Snow White remake continues its struggle to garner a strong buzz as the casting controversy surrounding its main star drags on. Lead actor Rachel Zegler responds to the latest criticism hurled her way as the Disney film’s debut draws near.

Via her Instagram page, Zegler addressed a complaint from a fan who questioned her fitness for the role and her singing abilities. The fan said “no thanks” to her casting and asked Disney why the studio found it “difficult to cast a soprano,” alluding to Zegler’s singing range. However, Zegler responded gracefully, saying, “I am a soprano!” before pointing him to West Side Story on Disney+ to see more of her singing prowess. The West Side Story remake, helmed by Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg, was a breakthrough for Zegler, whose performance as Maria showed she was a soprano, a requirement for the film.

With a week to go before the Snow White live-action adaptation hits theaters, the negativity surrounding Zegler’s casting hasn’t toned down after years of movie lovers objecting to Disney’s decision to choose her for the role. Some of the criticism regards Zegler’s Latina heritage, while others have targeted her for stating that the original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is dated and had problematic portrayals of the titular princess and her love interest, Prince Florian. Zegler has been affected by the backlash surrounding her casting. However, the former DC Extended Universe star insisted she’s proud to have been cast as Snow White in the remake.

Disney is well aware of the noise surrounding Zegler, plus the backlash against co-star and Evil Queen actor Gal Gadot, who has faced heat for supporting her native Israel in the Hamas conflict. As a result, the House of Mouse has scaled back its promotion of the Snow White remake, including the reported scrapping of its U.K. premiere and insistence on controlled press events to ensure Zegler and Gadot don’t face questions about their respective controversies. The change of plans comes from Disney’s reported insistence on moving on from the film, with the studio’s expectations lowered due to the lack of buzz.

The opening weekend projections for Snow White, while decent, have declined from previous forecasts, with the film expected to make $53 million domestically during its first three days. Fan reaction to the live-action fantasy adventure’s trailers has been mixed at best, with debates about everything from Zegler’s performance to the presentation of the dwarfs.

Snow White Gets Reimagined

The Snow White remake sees Zegler’s eponymous character looking to stop the Evil Queen, her mischievous stepmother, from taking control of her kingdom. The film, directed by The Amazing Spider-Man franchise helmer Marc Webb, also features Andrew Burnap and Martin Klebba.

Snow White opens in theaters on Mar. 21.
