‘We need to end this’: Disney gives FINAL verdict on Rachel Zegler’s Snow White

Rachel Zegler looks up in Snow White

The Snow White remake’s frosty reception continues to be the main talking point as its imminent theatrical premiere draws closer. A new report details Disney’s strategy to try and limit the negative buzz before the live-action adaptation’s debut as controversy surrounds its two top stars, Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources close to the situation explained that Disney has been “going through the motions” with its Snow White marketing campaign approach. The studio reportedly scaled back its promotion and press exposure to eradicate conversations about the controversies involving Zegler and Gadot, focusing on promoting the film’s family-friendly themes. However, with tickets only going out on sale this week and Disney actively avoiding major premieres for the movie, one source claims the House of Mouse feels trapped under the pressure and wants the movie’s promotional cycle to pass quickly.

“They’ve been going through the motions on Snow White, all but saying, ‘we need to get this thing over with,’” the source said. “An advance sales cycle of less than two weeks just screams ‘we have zero faith in this thing.’ And it couldn’t come at a worse point, when the industry is just trying to limp along to May.’”

Disney reportedly decided against a big U.K. premiere for the film, instead opting for a Zegler performance at Disney’s Segovia-based castle in Spain, the building that inspired the original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Furthermore, the remake’s upcoming Los Angeles screening on Mar. 15 won’t allow the regular red-carpet press to attend, so Zegler and Gadot can avoid facing questions. A theater owner and rival studio source stated that Disney’s marketing machine had been muted about Snow White until recently. The ticketing issue was raised, considering most Disney films begin sales a month or more before their theatrical debuts.

A live-action adaptation of the titular 1930s animated classic, Snow White sees Zegler play the eponymous Disney princess as she tries to free her kingdom from the proverbial shackles of the Evil Queen, portrayed by Gadot. Zegler’s casting upset many movie lovers due to her Latina heritage, with the toxic backlash reminiscent of the controversy surrounding Halle Bailey’s casting as Ariel in The Little Mermaid live-action remake. Furthermore, Zegler made an enemy of long-time Snow White fans by claiming the original movie was dated and had problematic portrayals of the main character and her love interest, Prince Florian. These comments, among others, led fans to brand the remake as too “woke.” While Zegler has been affected by the negativity, she remains proud of the film and her work.

Gal Gadot Co-Stars as the Evil Queen

Meanwhile, Gadot, best known for her work in the Wonder Woman franchise, has been the subject of political controversy thanks to her social media activity. The award-winning Israeli actor has faced criticism for supporting her home country amid the Hamas conflict, prompting fiery responses from pro-Palestine supporters.

Amid the complaints, which include negative reactions to the seven dwarfs’ portrayal, box-office projections for Snow White‘s opening weekend are solid, though less encouraging than past predictions. The film’s outlook looked bleak from the mixed reviews to the opening trailer, with its YouTube dislikes outweighing its likes.

Snow White opens in theaters on Mar. 21.
