Folks were shocked to learn that Shawn Ashmore has a twin brother, Aaron Ashmore.
Wesley Evers, is that you? The Rookie fans thought they spotted Shawn Ashmore on a popular Netflix series … but it turns out that may not be the case!
Fans know Shawn for playing an L.A. lawyer on The Rookie, ever since he first appeared back on the show in season 1. While viewers are familiar with him as a series regular, many got quite a surprise when they decided to tune in to season 3 of the hit Netflix drama Ginny & Georgia.
As fans saw Georgia Miler (Brianne Howey) on trial for the murder of Wellsbury resident Tom Fuller, they realized her abusive ex-husband Gil Timmins would be a part of the show’s darker storyline. And when Gil showed up to take back custody of his and Georgia’s son Austin (Diesel La Torraca), fans were convinced that Shawn was the actor playing him.
But in a surprise twist of events, fans discovered it isn’t actually Shawn starring on Ginny & Georgia. He has an identical twin brother, actor Aaron Ashmore, who’s portrayed Gil on the drama since the character first appeared in season 2.

Given how it’s easy to mix Shawn and Aaron up when watching their respective acting work, it only made sense for The Rookie and Ginny & Georgia fans to voice their confusion on Reddit.
“This whole time I thought I was watching Shawn Ashmore from the Rookie!” one person wrote in the Ginny & Georgia Reddit forum. “I literally just found out that gil (aaron) has a twin. I thought he was on the rookie and ginny and georgia 😭 (I didn’t even know his name before today so it’s my fault),” another penned. “I knew there were twins but i always thought the rookie guy was gil omg,” a different viewer added.
Well, talk about an understandable mix-up! As for what else fans may recognize Aaron from, he’s starred in projects like Smallville, Warehouse 13 and Locke and Key. And in addition to Ginny & Georgia, he’s currently starring in the Canadian medical drama SkyMed (which finished airing its third season in March 2025).
And for those wondering what it’s like for both Shawn and Aaron to be working in the acting industry, Shawn voiced to Us Weekly how it actually benefits them.
“When we were doing commercials, they would call us back in after we both auditioned,” he told the outlet. “And [they] said, ‘We love you guys both. And so it’s fair, we’re gonna flip a coin so that you guys can see it’s not preferential treatment … That was a really good thing for us to learn that it wasn’t like one person was getting chosen over the other,” he admitted. “It was like, ‘We like you both. We can only hire one. Let’s flip a coin.'”
Well, now we know who is who when we watch both The Rookie and Ginny & Georgia!
