Set in Yosemite National Park and starring Eric Bana, the Untamed teaser opens with him pointing out that, despite the tourist location being visited by 4 million eager explorers each year, “they see maybe ten percent of the park.” That leaves a lot of room for Untamed to cover, which the series aims to do over the course of its six episodes. “Things happen different out here,” he says later on as we’re treated to lots of gorgeous scenery, a dead body, and the series’ many stars, which include Sam Neill, Rosemary DeWitt, and Lily Santiago.
Starring Bana as Kyle Turner, a special agent in an elite branch of the National Park Service who works to enforce human law in nature’s vast wilderness, Untamed sends him on a collision course with the dark secrets within the park, and in his own past. Accompanied by rookie park ranger Naya Vasquez (Santiago), the pair set out to unravel the mystery behind a brutal death, and considering the series was created by Mark L. Smith (American Primeval, The Revenant) and Elle Smith (The Marsh King’s Daughter), we expect a lot of twists and turns on the way to getting answers.
‘Untamed’ Promises All the Fun of a Good Whodunit
As mentioned, Untamed boasts a stellar cast, including Neill as Paul Souter, a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who’s been the chief park ranger in Yosemite for half his life. Also along for the ride is DeWitt as Jill Bodwin, Turner’s ex-wife who remarried a few years after their divorce. Despite their marriage ending, the two maintain a strong bond that’s held together by events from their past.
While it’s too early to know for sure, we suspect that there’s a lot more to Neill’s character of Souter than meets the eye based on the teaser trailer, and that’s part of the fun of movies and TV shows like Untamed. They allow you to read into things to try and guess who the killer is long before the big reveal. Oh, you heard some ominous music? Well, that must mean that guy’s in on it, right?!
Untamed is just one of many series Netflix has on its schedule for summer and beyond, as we’ll also see the return of favorites like Squid Game, Wednesday, and – of course – the grand finale of Stranger Things later this year. All six episodes of the new crime thriller will drop on July 17, but if you’re in the mood to check out its inspirations before then, all four seasons of Ozark are available on the streaming service, while Yellowstone is available on Peacock. If you want to see what talent Untamed‘s creators bring to the table, American Primeval is also available on Netflix, while The Marsh King’s Daughter is on Hulu.
‘Untamed’ Mirrors the Atmosphere of ‘The Revenant’

One thing that fans can be certain of is that Untamed could well become an Emmy contender, and co-showrunner and executive producer Mark L. Smith is certainly not averse to pushing actors to new levels of dedication to a role to get the best performance, as was seen in The Revenant.
Just like DiCaprio’s survivalist movie of 2015, Untamed will make the most of some formidable terrain and locations to tell its story, making the wilderness as much a character of the miniseries as any of the human cast. While Untamed takes the form of a murder mystery, there is certainly a dark danger in the atmosphere created by the wilderness of Yosemite that really gives the show the same sense that there are dangers hidden all around, just waiting to be uncovered.
