Michael Connelly marks 20 years of the Lincoln Lawyer series in 2025.
The Proving Ground, out in October, will mark Connelly’s eighth novel in the series.
Entertainment Weekly exclusively debuts the cover below.
Over his lengthy publishing career, Michael Connelly has tackled all manner of crimes in Los Angeles.
Now, in 2025, which marks 20 years of Mickey Haller, a.k.a the Lincoln Lawyer, he’s turning to the new horizon of A.I. and its implications for wrongdoing in The Proving Ground, for which Entertainment Weekly can exclusively reveal the cover.
“It’s the 20th anniversary of the Lincoln Lawyer, and for The Proving Ground, I decided to put him in a new direction,” Connelly teases. “As a newly minted public interest litigator, he takes on the billion dollar AI industry in a case fraught with intrigue and danger.”
Out Oct. 21, the novel follows Mickey Haller through his latest case, which explores the burgeoning world of artificial intelligence and the perils of its lack of guardrails. He files a civil suit against a company whose chatbot told a 16-year-old boy that it was okay to kill his ex-girlfriend for disloyalty. Representing the girl’s family, Mickey teams up with another beloved Connelly character, journalist Jack McEvoy, who is seeking to be a fly on the wall during the trial as the basis for a book he’s writing.

‘The Proving Ground’ by Michael Connelly.Little, Brown and Company
When Mickey puts Jack to work going through the huge amounts of printed discovery materials, it leads them to find a key witness in a whistleblower who’s been too afraid to speak up. But given the billion-dollar stakes and power of the AI industry, Mickey is going to need one hell of a gambit to come out on top (or even alive).
This is a big year for Connelly. Not only is the crime novelist celebrating 20 years of one of his most popular characters, but there are three current series based on his work on or soon coming to streaming. Ballard hits Prime Video on July 9 and follows Maggie Q’s LAPD Detective Renee Ballard. Titus Welliver reprises his role as Harry Bosch for the series.
Filming for season 4 of Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer has wrapped and fans expect the new season to debut on the streaming platform either later this year or in early 2026. The fourth season will take its inspiration from the sixth book in the series, The Law of Innocence.
Meanwhile, Bosch: Legacy dropped its third and final season on Prime Video back in March. The conclusion of the series also served as something of a backdoor pilot for Ballard, which will continue the world established in the Bosch series.
