Netflix’s new crime drama series The Waterfront, which has drawn many comparisons to the Emmy-winning series Ozark, has topped the Netflix streaming charts for the third consecutive week. Despite dropping from 11.6 million views to just 5.6 million between its second and third weeks on Netflix, it still holds in the number one English-language spot.

The Waterfront has been one of the top-performing new series of 2025 for Netflix, on the same level as American Primeval, Ransom Canyon, and Sirens. Despite the streaming popularity of the new show and the plan for a second season by series creator Kevin Williamson, Netflix has surprisingly not renewed The Waterfront for season 2.

The Waterfront has been #1 on Netflix for 3 weeks in a row, in terms of English-language series in the U.S., which is a pretty rare feat for the streamer. Shockingly, however, season 2 still hasn’t been renewed, which is stirring up some confusion among fans who are eagerly waiting for a firm update.

The 4th of July holiday weekend saw an expected massive dip in viewership for Netflix across the board. The Waterfront was barely able to hold onto Netflix’s top spot, even after going neck and neck with The Sandman season 2, which amassed 5.3 million views after releasing its first volume on July 3, 2025.

Even though Netflix hasn’t officially renewed The Waterfront season 2 at the time of writing, the Kevin Williamson series still has a very strong chance at getting picked up. Ransom Canyon, which was released on Netflix back in April 2025, wasn’t officially renewed for season 2 until late June. This suggests that it’s only a matter of time for The Waterfront.

The Waterfront received mixed reviews from critics, resulting in a Rotten Tomatoes score of 64%. Its viewership numbers have been quite strong on Netflix since its June 19 release date, but it hasn’t had much competition on the streaming platform. Squid Game season 3, which did record-breaking numbers, competes in a separate non-English chart.

To The Waterfront’s credit, a new series holding the top spot on any Netflix streaming chart is certainly something to applaud. The real test of The Waterfront’s strength will arrive with next week’s release of its new limited series, Untamed, a murder mystery set in Yosemite National Park, on July 17, 2025.

If the series still hasn’t been renewed by the end of August, that would be a much more definitive sign that The Waterfront is dead in the water.
