Patrick Mahomes Gets Good News After Chiefs’ $94 Million Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
After getting shut down by the Eagles in the Super Bowl last year and watching their three-peat dreams slip away, the Kansas City Chiefs are on a serious mission for redemption. They’ve got their sights locked on another Super Bowl run but this time, they want to make sure they actually finish the job.
And to pull that off, they know exactly who needs protecting: Patrick Mahomes. The front office just made a massive $94 million move to lock in the guys who keep their star quarterback upright and firing. Safe to say, Mahomes got some pretty good news to kick off this revenge tour.
The NFL account on X posted an update from the Chiefs regarding their off-season activities. The post said, “Chiefs, OL Trey Smith finalizing 4-year, $94M extension with $70M guranteed to make him the highest-paid guard in the NFL.”
This news was welcomed by Mahomes who needed all but a single emoji to sum up his feelings about Smith’s extension.
According to reports, Smith signed a 4 year, $94 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, including $70 million guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $23.5 million. This makes him the highest paid guard in the league knocking off Landon Dickerson from the top spot who had an average annual salary of $21 million.
Back in February, the Chiefs slapped the franchise tag on Smith, giving him a one-year deal worth $23.4 million and setting the clock ticking to get something more permanent done by July 15.

If they hadn’t figured it out, he’d be stuck playing under the tag for the year. Smith, who just earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2024, was actually one of only two players tagged this offseason, the other being Tee Higgins with the Bengals. Now, just like Higgins, Smith doesn’t have to stress it anymore, he’s locked in with the Chiefs for the long haul.
