Offensive lineman Trey Smith made his first Pro Bowl during the 2024 NFL season, and he’s being rewarded with a new contract. The Kansas City Chiefs have locked the 26-year-old into a four-year deal that makes him the highest paid ever at his position.
Chiefs Make Trey Smith The Highest Paid Guard In NFL History
After being drafted in the 6th round in 2021, Smith has exceeded expectations. He became a starter immediately during his rookie season, and has stayed in the lineup ever since. During his four years in the league, he has missed just one game, playing in 67 of a possible 68, and he was an important piece of two different Super Bowl victories for his team.
Smith was on his rookie contract until this offseason, and was scheduled to be a free agent in 2025. But early in the offseason, the Chiefs placed their franchise tag on him, which gave them until July 15th at 4pm to convert the deal into a long-term one.
Kansas City did just that, inking Smith to a four-year deal worth $94 million, giving him an average annual value of $23.5 million. That makes him the highest paid guard in NFL history, surpassing the deals that Robert Hunt and Chris Lindstrom signed in recent years.
Offensive Line A Focal Point For Kansas City This Offseason
The offensive line has certainly been a focal point for the Chiefs this offseason. They gave up 41 total sacks during the 2024 campaign, and their rushing attack ranked 22nd in the league in terms of total yards gained. Patrick Mahomes was sacked six times in the Super Bowl, and was a big reason why the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the game.
In addition to the re-signing of Trey Smith, the team also extended center Creed Humphrey and signed Jaylon Moore in free agency. They then used their first round pick on Josh Simmons from Ohio State.
Kansas City is hoping that a revamped and recharged offensive line will help them get back to glory in 2025. They are a perennial Super Bowl favorite with Mahomes under center, but have the sour taste in their mouth from their beat down in the big game last season.
On the eve of training camp, they are currently listed as the team with the 4th shortest odds in the NFL of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. Their designation is currently sitting at +800 according to DraftKings, behind only the Eagles, Bills, and Ravens, who are all listed at +650.
