Although Netflix’s slow-burning murder mystery series Untamed was originally released as a miniseries, there’s a clear path forward for it to expand with a second season. The six-part series co-written by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, American Primeval) was released in full on Netflix on July 17, 2025.

Untamed surged on Netflix’s global streaming charts just hours after its release, landing the coveted number one spot on the streaming platform. Eric Bana leads the cast of Untamed as Kyle Turner, a Yosemite National Park federal agent haunted by personal tragedy who gives everything to solve the apparent murder case of a young girl.

Although Untamed has a definitive and shocking twist ending, the series could continue if Netflix were to take a different route with the franchise. It would have to deviate from the standard serial format and instead make Untamed an anthology show with a new cast of characters each season.

Because Untamed is a miniseries, a second season following the same story as season 1 seems very unlikely. However, Netflix could have Untamed move to another national park for a new story and cast, such as Yellowstone in Wyoming, Zion in Utah, or Acadia in Maine.

Eric Bana recently speculated on the potential future of his character Kyle following Untamed’s ending. “We knew that the nature of his job is that these ISB agents do get moved around from park to park, which is why the ending is the way that it is because that is a very feasible thing and it was part of the story structure.”

While this in no way confirms that a second season of Untamed is happening, there seems to be a developing consensus on what a second season would look like. Even if Bana didn’t return to a potential Untamed season 2, new characters in a new setting would be the best step forward.

Some Untamed fans have drawn early comparisons to HBO’s celebrated series True Detective, which would make even more sense for Untamed’s future. Each season of True Detective has followed a completely new murder mystery with new characters and locations, setting up a successful blueprint for the Netflix series. As the story goes with Netflix, viewership reigns supreme on the streaming platform, so if Untamed season 2 does happen, it will be because the series will continue to dominate global charts throughout the rest of July 2025 and beyond. It’s too early to call it at this point, but Untamed is still in a good enough position to remain hopeful.
