Liverpool have paid another touching tribute to Diogo Jota by listing him on their squad profile page in his own section under the banner of ‘Forever’ following his tragic death.
Jota, 28, and his younger brother, Andre Silva, were killed in a car accident earlier this month in the Spanish province of Zamora. The Portugal forward was on his way back to Merseyside for pre-season training when the tragedy occurred.
Liverpool have already confirmed that they will be retiring the No.20 shirt in Jota’s memory.
And the Premier League champions have paid another touching tribute to the talented forward by including him in the squad list for the current season in his own section on their official club website.
Liverpool’s gesture follows confirmation from Jota’s former club, Wolves, that he had been inducted into their Hall of Fame. “There is such a feeling of sadness and disbelief around this awful tragedy that we wanted to make this tribute of our own as soon as we could,” said Wolves Hall of Fame chairman and the club’s vice president, John Richards, in a statement.
“Like everyone else, we’ve been stunned by events, and we remember what a wonderful player Diogo was for Wolves during that unforgettable promotion season under Nuno and our early years back in the Premier League.
“His record of 44 goals at Wolves, and then 65 at Liverpool as a Premier League title winner, speaks volumes. So many fans across the game – especially in Portugal after he helped them win the Nations League this summer – are feeling his loss deeply. We saw no reason to delay this decision.
“We hope it will bring a little comfort to those who were close to Diogo and André, and we trust Wolves supporters will understand that this gesture is made with real love and admiration, and also fully justified.”
Jota spent three years at Molineux and scored 44 goals before being signed by Liverpool in September of 2020. He quickly established himself as a key player for Wolves, whom he initially joined on loan, firing them to promotion to the Premier League and a seventh-placed finish which secured European football just 12 months later.
Wolves will pay tribute to Jota and Andre at both their final pre-season friendly against Celta Vigo on 9 August and their opening Premier League fixture of the new campaign against Manchester City on 16 August.
