FIRST LOOK ALERT: Sydney Sweeney & Amanda Seyfried light up the chilling new trailer for The Housemaid đ„đ€
The Freida McFadden bestseller is finally coming to life â and this twisted psychological thriller promises betrayal, obsession, and secrets buried deep inside one terrifying mansion.

The film is based on the 2022 novel of the same name, which went viral on BookTok.

Sydney Sweeneyâs upcoming film The Housemaid just released its first trailer, giving audiences a sneak peek at one of the most highly anticipated book adaptations of the year.
Based on the 2022 Freida McFadden novel of the same name, the Paul Feig-directed film is set to arrive in theaters on Dec. 19. The film stars Sweeney as Millie Calloway, a young woman who lands a job as a live-in maid for a wealthy suburban family. What Millie doesnât know is that they only look perfect from the outside â especially when it comes to wife and mom Nina Winchester, played in the film by Amanda Seyfried.
The trailer opens with Nina screaming in her car â before cutting to a series of shots hinting at the trouble to come. (Why is there a coroner outside a beautiful suburban home? Well, this is a domestic thriller after all!) The trailer then cuts to Nina and Millieâs first cheerful meeting as she hires her as a live-in maid to do some light housework, cooking and organizing. Unfortunately, the trailer is set to a dark rendition of Sabrina Carpenterâs âPlease Please Pleaseâ â so, obviously, thereâs something amiss here.
Is Nina acting… strangely? Is there something, or rather someone, behind that locked brown door? And might Millie and Ninaâs husband, Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), spark a secret romance? Weâll have to wait until December â unless youâve read the book â to find out.
The Housemaid teased the trailer earlier this month with a series of cryptic videos on the Housemaid TikTok account. The first teaser, released on Sept. 12, shows a gate to what is presumably the Winchester mansion opening. We then hear Seyfriedâs Nina greeting Sweeney and telling her to âplease call me Nina.â
A second teaser takes us inside the house, to a closed white door. âI donât know what Iâd do without you,â Seyfried says. A frightened Sweeney, however, then says, âI do not want to go back.â A third video, of a brown door, features Seyfried saying: âI want you to feel safe here.â And a fourth video returns to the gate, with Seyfried noting: âI have a really good feeling about this, Millie.â
A teaser that dropped on Sept. 15 gave us a wider view of the house, turning the Winchester mansion into a dollhouse-like version of the home Millie finds herself working in. In the upstairs bedroom, Seyfriedâs Nina is held by husband Andrew. The coupleâs daughter, Cecilia (Indiana Elle), is also in a bedroom on the same floor. Meanwhile, outside trimming hedges is Enzo, the groundskeeper, who is played by 365 Days and Another Simple Favor actor Michele Morrone.
Finally, coming in the front door â wearing blue jeans â is Sweeneyâs character Millie. Just as she arrives, the tagline for the movie appears: âDiscover what lies behind closed doors.â Emphasis on the lies, of course!
Whether or not youâve read the book, which went viral on TikTok after its release in 2022, there are bound to be some surprises in store. Seyfried shared at this yearâs CinemaCon back in April that she will ânever forgetâ how playing Nina made her feel.

âI went to places I never thought Iâd go to,â the Mamma Mia! star said, per Deadline. âThe surprises in my own experience in playing this character were life-affirming and career-affirming. We reached places I never could go as an actor. We played some wacky shit. And werenât expecting to.â
In an interview with People, Sweeney said that Millie is exactly âthe type of character I love to play: complex, strong and with a little something up her sleeve.â
âI canât wait for fans to see how hard we all worked to bring The Housemaid to life,â she said.
