Will There Be a Season 4 of ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’? Jenny Han Says

The author and showrunner left fans on a hopeful note ahead of ‘TSITP’ Season 3 Episode 11.

The Summer I Turned Pretty aired its final episode on Sept. 16, but fans have long expressed that they aren’t ready to let go of Belly (Lola Tung), Conrad (Christopher Briney), Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), and the Cousins beach house just yet.

But could author and showrunner Jenny Han surprise the fandom with an additional, fourth season?

While the speculation about secret episodes in addition to the 11 previously announced didn’t pan out, there was a hint that a continuation of some sort isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Is The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 4 Happening?

The Summer I Turned Pretty’s third season has been revealed to be the show’s last, though viewers are remaining hopeful that, much like Belly, Han will have a change of heart and agree to a fourth season.

As of now, nothing has been announced to that effect, as the three seasons were based on Han’s trilogy of books (The Summer I Turned Pretty, It’s Not Summer Without You, and We’ll Always Have Summer).

However, on The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 11, the final moments of the season include a thank you letter from Han, which concludes with, “Maybe we’ll meet again one summer in Cousins. Until then – all of my love always, Jenny,” leaving it quite open for a future season, spinoff or sequel.

It likely wouldn’t be a bad idea for Prime Video, as the series set a record for viewership, with Deadline reporting that the TSITP Season 3 premiere episode drew 25 million viewers globally in the first seven days, with viewership for the third and final season up 40% in the first week when compared with season 2. And compared to season 1, it tripled.

It’s currently the most-watch season of TV among women 18-34, per the report, and the fifth-most watch returning season on Prime Video.

Jenny Han Gives Fans Hope for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 4

As established, the ratings are a success, so it makes sense for Prime Video, but would Han be on board? Given her letter at the end of The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 11, it definitely seems like a possibility, but she’s also previously expressed interest.

While chatting with Entertainment Weekly, the creator revealed she’s not ruling out a return to Cousins just yet, giving fans a glimmer of hope by noting of a potential revival or sequel, “Never say never — I never do,” Han stated.

She added: “If the story is there, then I’m there. As a storyteller, you just get hit with inspiration all the time. If I had a really great idea that I was excited by, that I wanted to keep telling the story, and if [the stars] were excited to do it, then I would be so pumped. It really depends on if I feel like there is more story to tell.”

Han revealed a huge draw would be working with the cast again, noting, “I love working with all these guys, that’s at the core of it. I would always welcome working with them on this, or something else. Who knows what the future holds?”

Of course, as Han mentioned, it has to make sense, as she explained, “Amazon Prime has been very supportive of my vision, and I haven’t felt a pressure to keep it going just to keep it going,” Han says. “It’s all about doing what’s best for the story. And you obviously want to give the fans a really satisfying ending.”

As for Amazon MGM Studios TV boss Vernon Sanders, he also remained open to the idea, ultimately putting the power in Han’s hands, telling Variety, “You know, all plans lead with Jenny Han, and she’s known from the beginning, how she’s wanted to do this, so we’ve been focused on this, getting the season right and ending it the right way. And I think once the full thing is released, we’ll be able to have more conversations with her. She’s got new ideas that she’s been dying to tackle. So whatever Jenny wants to do, we want to do it with her.”

Is the Cast on Board for Another Season?

There’s no The Summer I Turned Pretty without leading lady Belly, so it’s optimistic that Tung told EW, “I think it’s such a privilege to be any part of her cinematic universe, so if I was ever asked, I’m there.”

Fans Already Have an Idea for a TSITP Spinoff

Now that we know exactly how the love triangle panned out—and which brother Belly chose in the end—down the line, it might make sense for a fourth season to tackle the aftermath, or even see the adult years of their lives. However, plenty of fans had something else in mind.

Fans across social media, as well as outlets like Brit+Co and Harper’s Bazaar, expressed a desire to dig into Susannah’s (Rachel Blanchard) and Laurel’s (Jackie Chung) storyline, with suggestions for a prequel about the friends’ college years to “get their history.” Many have even said they’re more invested in the moms’ storyline than they are in the love triangle.

Even Tung told The Hollywood Reporter, when asked about a spinoff, that she’d love to see “Laurel and Susannah, the younger years.”

Belly’s journey—and the love triangle—came to an end after three years, and you obviously have to see how it all ends for yourself. The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 11, the series finale, and the entire season, can be streamed exclusively on Prime Video.
