Who are the Huntingdon train attack victims? Footballer in hospital after mass stabbing

Scunthorpe United named one of their players, Jonathan Gjoshe, as a victim, saying he suffered ‘non-life-threatening injuries’.

A footballer has been named as one of the victims of the mass train stabbing spree in Huntingdon on Saturday.

Scunthorpe United defender Jonathan Gjoshe is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the mass stabbing on a train in Cambridgeshire, the club said.

Anthony Williams, 32, from Peterborough, has been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder relating to the attack on Saturday, 1 November.

He is accused of carrying out the attack on a Doncaster-London Kings Cross service at about 7.40pm.

The train was forced to make an emergency stop in Huntingdon, where the suspect was detained by police.

In a post on social media, Scunthorpe United confirmed Gjoshe, who joined the club just two months ago, was one of the victims of the attack.

They said: “Everyone at the club, from the Board, management and his teammates, along with all staff behind the scenes, sends our heartfelt well wishes to Jonathan for a full recovery, which is also extended to all the victims on board the train.”

The BBC reported Gjoshe, 22, was slashed across the bicep during the attack and has had to have an operation in hospital.

More details about the victims have begun to emerge following the attack. Here’s what we know so far:

Who are the victims?

Ten people were initially taken to hospital following the attack, with another person later seeking help, but as of Monday, 3 November, only five were still receiving treatment.

Along with the attempted murder of Gjoshe, Williams has also been charged with attempting to kill Scott Bletcher, Michael Paffett, Kevin Deely, David Presland, Sachin Balakrishnan, Stephen Crean, Samir Zitouni, Rasza Aslam and Scott Green.

An unnamed LNER worker is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after he intervened to stop the attacker.

Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy, of British Transport Police (BTP), said CCTV from the train showed the LNER worker’s actions “were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved people’s lives”.

The BBC has also spoken to Crean, who said he “tussled” with the attacker as he attempted to stop him getting into the next carriage.

Crean said the attacker asked him: “Do you want to die? Do you want to die?” Crean said he had been slashed on his head and hand.

He said: “He’s gone for me and there was a tussle in the arms with him and that’s where my hand, the fingers are really bad, four cuts through them, sliced.

“And then he raised it and must have caught me when I was ducking and diving and must have caught me on the head.”

Williams has also been connected with several other stabbings by investigators.

What has Anthony Williams been charged with?

Williams appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with 10 counts of attempted murder over the incident.

Separately, Williams is charged with one count of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article over an incident at Pontoon Dock DLR station in London in the early hours of Saturday, where a victim – named as Isaiah Ishmael Idris – suffered facial injuries after being attacked.

He allegedly used a “large kitchen knife” in both attacks, according to court documents.

On Monday, 3 November, Cambridgeshire police said it was also looking at three further incidents relating to the train attack on Friday and Saturday.

The first involves a man with a knife at a barbers shop in Fletton at 7.25pm on Friday. Police said the incident was reported two hours after it happened after the man had left and that officers had not attended.

A second incident was reported to police at 9.25am on Saturday by the same barbers while the man was still at the scene. Officers were deployed to the location but were unable to find him.

In a third incident police said may be linked, a 14-year-old was stabbed by a man with a knife in the city centre on Friday at 7.10pm.

The investigation by British Transport Police into the train attack will include the stabbing of the 14-year-old and the incident at the barber’s shop.

Williams has also been charged with actual bodily harm in connection with an alleged attack on a police officer following the Cambridgeshire attack.

Williams has also been charged with two counts of possessing a bladed article, one for the Cambridgeshire attack and one relating to the incident in London.
