When Nicole Kidman went all-out for a role she didn’t get: “I couldn’t believe the way people reacted”
Nicole Kidman is an unstoppable force, with performances spanning Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut to the British charmer Paddington. Such a successful career can only be the result of endless dedication, and if anyone has grafted hard for her place in Hollywood, it’s Kidman.
The Australian-born started her career in her native country, but by the beginning of the 1990s, she was making steps towards the heart of the industry, spurred by her appearance in the American action film Days of Thunder, starring Tom Cruise.
From that point on, she kept auditioning for Hollywood films, reuniting with Cruise, who was now her husband, for Far and Away. Further recognition came when she appeared in Batman Forever in 1995, as well as Gus Van Sant’s brilliantly dark satire To Die For, but there was another film released that year that she desperately wanted a part in.
In fact, to prepare for her audition, Kidman got into character off-screen, dressing up and testing the public’s reaction to her when she was dressed as someone entirely different. Yet, all this dedication ultimately proved unsuccessful – but at least she can say she tried.
Talking to Backstage, Kidman recalled how she wanted the part of Ginger McKenna in Martin Scorsese’s Casino, but it just wasn’t meant to be. “I remember dressing up to audition for Casino with Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro. I dressed up completely, so you couldn’t recognise me, and I walked down the street and men were whistling and stuff like that.”
She continued, “I didn’t get it—I was way too young—but I went in there and Martin didn’t know who I was. De Niro didn’t know who I was. I just pretended I was that woman. I was so far from that woman, but I had this low-cut shirt, the shortest [skirt]. And to do the research to build up for it, I would go into stores dressed like that. I couldn’t believe the way people reacted. I mean, I’ve done so many wild things, it’s insane.”
While Kidman certainly put the effort in, she just didn’t meet the requirements to play the character, and Sharon Stone would instead bag the role – and an Academy Award nomination for ‘Best Actress’ to boot.
“I have that terrible thing that once I’m in it, I pretty much will try and do anything. It’s my commitment to the art, and I don’t have strong boundaries because I didn’t learn them at 14. I just learned full and utter commitment,” Kidman added, reflecting on her tendency to give an audition her all. What has she got to lose? It’s no wonder she’s booked so many roles over the years.
Kidman has never wound up working with Scorsese, and she once made a comment about his lack of female-centric stories. I mean, how many Scorsese movies have a female lead? If there is a main female character, she’s always accompanied by a male lead – it’s certainly not one of the director’s strengths.
“I’ve always said I want to work with Scorsese, if he does a film with women,” Kidman told Vanity Fair. Maybe one day that’ll happen, but for now, it seems like she is slightly more focused on working with female filmmakers.
