4 Years Ago, This 10/10 Western Masterpiece With Near-Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Was Quietly Released

Old Henry holding gun and with blood

A 2021 Western movie deserved to be much bigger than it was, and four years later, I believe it is the perfect time for genre fans to finally discover the film. There has been a surge in Western TV shows over the past few years, with it all dating back to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. Season 1 debuted in 2018.

Since then, several Yellowstone spinoffs have come from Sheridan’s creative mind, with a wide array of Westerns and Neo-Westerns gracing both the big and small screens. With such a wide breadth of content, a few gems ended up being lost, and that is precisely the case of this 2021 Western that stars an actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A Western Masterpiece Was Quietly Released 4 Years Ago

The movie in question is Old Henry, which was released in theaters on October 1, 2021. However, the film did not get the same wide release that many movies do. Instead, Old Henry‘s theatrical run was extremely limited, with the Western playing in only roughly thirty theaters in the United States. In the end, its worldwide box office was just $77,463.

It is easy to see how Old Henry would have flown under the radar. The movie did fare better on digital, which was the plan. Old Henry was a steady figure in iTunes’ top ten for the first two months it was available on the platform. However, VOD does not have as wide a range as streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and more.

Why Old Henry Is Worth Watching

Based on the movie’s slept-on theatrical run and its availability since then, I believe now is the perfect time for those who have not yet watched Old Henry to check it out. The Western became available on Paramount+ as of September, the same streaming home of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise, making it easily reachable for fans of the genre.

Old Henry holds an impressive 94% critics’ score and a respectable 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Tim Blake Nelson plays the titular Henry, with the Western following the man as he saves the life of a heavily injured man, Curry (Scott Haze), and sees that act put him and his son in harm’s way. The movie chronicles Henry’s attempt to protect his home from the group of criminals that come for the stolen money Curry, a lawman, had retrieved.

Henry harbors a secret that the movie slowly reveals to the viewer as his past comes into focus, and the answer to that mystery is quite rewarding. Old Henry might present a straightforward story, but it is done through impeccable artistic lenses to create an enthralling Western with impactful action, a multi-layered main character, and a tense tone. Old Henry is worth watching.
