‘Emily in Paris’ Creator Darren Star Unpacks Season 5 “Conflict” Between Emily & Mindy And “Chemistry” Between Mindy & Alfie Plus Season 6 Hopes

L-R: Lily Collins as Emily and Ashley Park as Mindy in ‘Emily In Paris’Caroline Dubois/Netflix
SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers for all ten episodes of Emily in Paris Season 5.
It looks like Lily Collins’ Emily Cooper will remain Emily in Paris, at least where Rome is concerned.
The ten-episode fifth season of Netflix’s comedy series is now available to stream ahead of Christmas with adventures back and forth from Rome and the fictional town of Solitano, Italy to Paris, France and then back to Venice for Emily, Mindy (Ashley Park), Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini), Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) and more. Two very specific plot points hint at the potential to head to Greece should the show be renewed for a sixth season. In the finale, Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) sends Emily a postcard from Greece, asking her to meet him there. He has ended up with time off after touring the world on a luxury yacht while cooking sustainable food for billionaire, rocket-owner and hotel magnate Thomas Heatherton (Jonathan Cake). “I hope Emily says yes to that invitation,” Star told Deadline when asked if Greece is the hope for a potential next season. “[Emily and Gabriel] reconnected in a nice way. [As for] where that takes them, I think it definitely hints at the idea that they’ll stay in each other’s lives.”

Star addressed all sorts of plot points from Mindy’s cliffhanger ending to the fate of Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) and Agence Grateau in the below interview.
DEADLINE: Emily and Mindy fight over Alfie this season. We haven’t seen that before. What made you want to incorporate an argument between them?
STAR: Well,I don’t think they fight over him. I think fight about the fact that Mindy kept something from Emily. I think we really wanted these women to have a little bit of a problem. We’ve never seen any conflict between them. I thought it was important to find some conflict between the two of them.
DEADLINE: Despite Nico (Paul Forman) coming back into the picture, it does seem like there’s a spark between Mindy and Alfie. Despite the engagement and everything, could Alfie still have a chance with Mindy?
STAR: Anything’s possible, and I definitely feel like the two of them had a lot of chemistry, and it came out of left field for Mindy. It’s not the way she saw her life going.
DEADLINE: When Ashley and Lucien read that part of their arcs, what were their reactions?
STAR: Lucien is always game for anything. [For] Ashley, I think it was, ‘Wait a second’. I think she really worried about, she didn’t want to feel like Mindy would really betray Emily. And I don’t think that she did. I think they felt like it was just something that was going to remain between them. I think at first, Ashley was a little concerned, how Mindy would be portrayed. But you know what? I also like characters who make mistakes. And people make mistakes and learn from their mistakes, and I think it added some growth to their relationship.

L-R: Ashley Park as Mindy, Lucien Laviscount as Alfie in ‘Emily in Paris’
DEADLINE: Could Benoît (Kevin Dias) ever come back?

STAR: I love Benoît,I don’t ever want to say that Benoît couldn’t come back. I would love to find a way to see Benoit again.
DEADLINE: Back to the proposal at the end, it was interesting that it was Mindy torn between these two guys. It’s always been Emily in the past. What made you want to end it on that note this season?
STAR: It’s where the story took us. It was a little bit of a twist, also, that the audience didn’t see coming, even though it was sort of there. And Emily was very focused on her expectations of what was going on for her, not realizing, not even aware of the complexity of Mindy’s situation.
DEADLINE: Emily and Marcello are done, but we saw them go back and forth this season in Rome. What made you not want to continue that thread?
STAR: In my mind, that’s the way the story was going to end between them, Emily having to make this choice, even if their engagement wasn’t out there, I think that, eventually, they could have ended up together, but I think it would have meant Emily moving to that small town. And I think it was basically something that she didn’t — in her heart, she wasn’t going to do.

DEADLINE: And she’s Emily in Paris.
STAR: Yeah, that’s for sure. That’s where her heart is.
DEADLINE: What about Jake from Michigan? He definitely reminded her of home, and they had chemistry too.
STAR: They did, but it doesn’t mean he can’t, that we won’t see him again next season.

L-R: Bryan Greenberg as Jake Campbell, Lily Collins as Emily of Emily in Paris
DEADLINE: We didn’t see a ton of Lucas Bravo. Was that distance and space between him and Emily setting up for end game in the future, if you get another season?

STAR: We’ll see. I think this season, they reconnected in a nice way. [As for] where that takes them. I think it definitely hints at the idea that they’ll stay in each other’s lives.
DEADLINE: It did feel like a deep breath or calm moment whenever they were together. Are you hoping to have a little bit of Greece in a future season?
STAR: I mean, I hope Emily says yes to that invitation.
DEADLINE: And if I recall the woman Camille (Camille Razat) was involved with, Sofia (Melia Kreiling), is from Greece…
STAR: You have a good memory.
DEADLINE: Could that all come back?
STAR: Possibly, [if] she’s in Greece. Possibly.
DEADLINE: Did you think, from Season 1, that you would move to other countries?
STAR: No, from season one, it wasn’t something that I was thinking about in a big way, but by the end of Season 3, it was something that I felt I really wanted to do. To expand the footprint of the series.
DEADLINE: There’s the tribute to Diego Borella in the end of the finale. He was in Venice, and the Venice episode was awesome.
STAR: Yeah, no. I mean, it was such a tragic, moment, and he was part of our Italian crew in Venice, but we’re all a family, and we really wanted to honor him, to dedicate the last episode to him.
DEADLINE: That fashion show was really cool in the water too, and how everyone was walking through in boots. Are there any other set pieces like that that you’d want to do?
STAR: I’m not thinking that far in the future. I think all the set pieces are connected to the storyline, and certainly Venice and the water rising, it’s something that’s just, it’s gonna, ‘Oh, that Aqua Alta only happens in Venice.’

L-R: Lily Collins as Emily, Minnie Driver as Princess Jane in ‘Emily In Paris’
DEADLINE: I have to ask about Sylvie too and Agence Grateau, because that’s another heart of the whole show. Are they like safe after Minnie Driver’s character comes in, or could there still be some fallout do you think?
STAR: Well, I’m not sure that Minnie Driver’s character, Princess Jane, saving them is the best outcome either. But I love Minnie. Love working with her. She was so terrific on the series this season, and [added] such a different color to everything you know. love her chemistry with Sylvie and her lack of chemistry with Emily.
DEADLINE: I was so bummed, because I felt Sylvie and Laurent were like, ‘Will they, won’t they?’ forever. What made you throw the loan in and make that seem final?
STAR: I think there’s always something about a relationship like theirs where you’re not fully connected. And I’m not sure we’ve heard Laurent’s full side of the story.
DEADLINE: That reminds me of Genevieve, because I know a lot of people didn’t love her, but she was around this season and then had her moment. Could she come back?
STAR: Yes, we have idea[s]. She can come back in an entirely different way.
DEADLINE: Is there anyone else you would hope to get involved in the series, acting-wise?
STAR: I don’t really ever specifically think of actors making cameos. It’s all sort of specific to the characters. This year we had some great guest stars. Michèle Laroque, who’s sort of a big star in France, was fantastic playing Sylvia’s friend. Great to have Mini on the show. Brian Greenberg. I think every season we find new opportunities.
