Forget ‘Bosch,’ Netflix Has the Perfect Dark Replacement Series

Move over, Bosch, Netflix has a new Harry on the scene. The streaming service just released a new image and official teaser for its upcoming new series, Detective Hole, based on the Harry Hole series of novels by Jo Nesbø. Created and written for the screen by the renowned Norwegian crime author, it follows the titular anti-hero, played by Tobias Santelmann, in a dark and dreary whodunnit that will see him wrestle not just with the grisly details of his latest case and his rival, the corrupt detective Tom Waaler, but also his own demons. The much-anticipated adaptation is set to release on the platform on March 26.

The trailer wastes no time setting up the next great television detective as a complicated man who blurs the boundaries of the law when he goes to work. When asked what it’s like working with the great Harry Hole, a colleague confirms he’s the best at what he does, but “He’s just not that good at everything else,” as he punches men in restaurants and alleys and shows up to work with just his ID covering his chest. He’s the other side of the coin to Waaler — an intelligent mind committed to stopping a serial killer at all costs, but unable to get out of his own way at times. The two adversaries aren’t likely to work together, however. From dark and stormy nights in the streets to glittering concert halls, Harry will be on a desperate search for answers to not only solve his latest case, but bring Waaler to justice before it’s too late. He might just need another drink or two to get through it all.

Detective Hole is a reunion for Netflix with Santelmann, who previously starred in the British historical war drama The Last Kingdom, which the streamer acquired in 2018. Working directly opposite him as Waaler is a big name in For All Mankind‘s Joel Kinnaman. While the two will be the focus as they cross ethical boundaries and clash on the case, Nesbø landed an eye-watering cast to fill out his adaptation, including Pia Tjelta, Ellen Helinder, Anders Baasmo, Maxime Baune Bochud, Kåre Conradi, Simon J. Berger, Peter Stormare, Fridtjov Såheim, Eili Harboe, Atle Antonsen, Manish Sharma, Jesper Christensen, Kristoffer Joner, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Linn Skåber, Jonas Strand Gravli, Sonny Lindberg, Agnes Kittelsen, Nader Khademi, Agot Sendstad, Maja Christiansen, Frank Kjosås, Kelly Gale, Oddgeir Thune, Ravdeep Singh Bajwa, Henrik Mestad, Ingar Helge Gimle, Henriette Steenstrup, Helge Jordal, Eirik Hallert, Anders Danielsen Lie, Ane Dahl Torp, and Dagny.

‘Detective Hole’ Isn’t the Only Jo Nesbø Adaptation on the Way

Directing Harry Hole’s upcoming arrival on the small screen are Øystein Karlsen and Anna Zackrisson, while Working Title is producing. With Nesbø working directly on the series, Netflix is hoping to have another winning detective series on its hands, like last year’s Dept. Q, that’s also accurate to the source material. Nesbø, in particular, has been a hot commodity of late as more companies are racing to adapt his books. Alongside Detective Hole, Cary Joji Fukunaga is directing an adaptation of the crime novelist’s Blood on Snow starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Benedict Cumberbatch, among others. A Man Called Otto producer Frederik Wikström was also tapped to helm The Night House, based on one of Nesbø’s most popular novels to date.
