“You could help me as much as I could even help you,” Bublé told one of the contestants.
The competition got fiercer on The Voice as Week 3 of Blind Auditions kicked off, with three four-chair turns and another Coach Replay moment that saw a third coach undoing a mistake.
Monday’s episode featured 13 more hopefuls vying for one of the 14 coveted spots each on Team Reba, Team Gwen, Team Snoop or Team Michael. While not every act who crossed the Voice stage was successful in landing a red-chair turn, the auditions featured one of the most eclectic mixes of singers and musical genres so far this season, from classical jazz and soul to power pop and indie folk.
As Reba McEntire, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé work hard to fill out their teams, here are the standout singers from the third episode of The Voice Season 26.
Gwen Stefani uses her Coach Replay power
The season’s youngest competitor, Jaylen Dunham, covered Beyoncé’s soul-R&B song “Listen” for his Blind Audition. But nerves got the best of him as the performance wore on and none of the coaches turned around. Dunham’s nervousness was picked up by Stefani, who made the observation following the audition. “As the song went on, you were getting more and more worried that we weren’t going to press, and I could hear it.”
Stefani had second thoughts about not pressing her button, mainly because of the raw talent he displayed at 14 and the potential she felt he had that was bubbling under the surface. “You have that regretful feeling; that’s what it’s for,” Stefani said of the Coach Replay power, which she used on Dunham.
Underdog story of the season
There are times when The Voice is not solely about vocal talent or performing prowess but the intangibles: Jeremy Beloate is one of those cases. The aspiring singer endured the loss of his father and two brothers — all to addiction — leading him and his family to believe they were stuck in an unending cycle of bad news.
The Voice seemed to change that perception. “Every few years it feels like something horrible is going to come,” Beloate said in his intro. “I feel like I’m the change.” He performed a cover of Giveon’s “Heartbreak Anniversary,” and his emotional rendition struck a chord with all four coaches.
After they learned of his tragic family history, McEntire was visibly affected and Bublé was emotional in his plea to have Beloate join his team: “Having someone like you, you could help me as much as I could even help you.” In the end, Beloate picked Bublé as his coach.
Who turns our chair
Indie folk duo MisterMoon, consisting of best friends Leah and Savs (who met on a double date), wowed the Voice stage with their cover of “Deeper Well” by Kacey Musgraves. The pair’s impressive harmonies, unique energy and calming presence drew the attention of McEntire and Snoop, who both pressed their buttons. The choice seemed obvious, since their musical style was more clearly aligned with McEntire’s background. But the duo made a surprising choice, going outside the box and picking the rapper to be their coach. After being chosen to lead them on their Voice journey, Snoop said the biggest reason he turned his chair was because “they sounded like they belong together.”
Impressive 4-chair turn
It’s rare to have multiple four-chair turns in a given episode, so the fact that Monday’s had three speaks to the level of talent coming through this season. The Voice saved the singer with the biggest wow factor for the end, closing out the two-hour installment with Frankie Torres, who showcased her powerhouse vocals and undeniable stage presence. She left all four coaches salivating at the idea of having her on their respective teams.
Torres’s strong rocker tone during her cover of Heart’s “Magic Man” stunned Stefani, who said the performance got “better and better” as it went on. But the No Doubt singer had tough competition with Bublé, Snoop and McEntire all making their best cases. Ultimately, it didn’t matter as Torres picked Stefani, one of her childhood idols, to be her coach.
Quote of the night
“I can’t wait when I get to steal him!” McEntire exclaimed after Beloate chose to be on Bublé’s team.
The Voice twist, which doesn’t come into play until later in the season, was clearly not on Bublé’s mind as he suddenly expressed concern about the possibility of losing Beloate down the line: “I didn’t even think about that! How do you even stop that from happening?”
A look ahead to the next episode
The Voice is back to twice a week! The singing competition returns for another round of Blind Auditions on Tuesday, and with each of the coaches’ teams about half full, the competition is going to get more heated. Plus, Bublé still wields the Coach Replay power, so all eyes are on him to see if and when he chooses to use it. Follow along as we continue on the Voice journey.
The Voice’s Blind Auditions continue Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
