Nicole Kidman has offered a rare insight into her life with ex-husband Tom Cruise in a brand new interview about the couple’s roles in the Stanley Kubrick film Eyes Wide Shut.

The controversial Kubrick film was released in 1999 about a year before Cruise filed for divorce from Kidman and was the legendary auteur’s final production before his death.

On Monday, Kidman, 56, sat down with the Los Angeles Times to discuss making the critically lauded film and the demise of her marriage to the Mission Impossible star.

The Aussie Oscar winner described the dynamic between herself, Cruise and Kubrick as a “triangle” with the film shoot stretching out to over two years.

“I suppose (Kubrick) was mining (our marriage),” Kidman told the newspaper.

“There were ideas he was interested in.

“He’d ask a lot of questions. But he had a strong sense of the story he was telling. I do remember him saying, ‘Triangles are hard. You have to tread carefully when it’s a triangle.’

“Because one person could feel ganged up on. But he was aware of that and knew how to manage us.”

Eyes Wide Shut is an erotic thriller about a young doctor and his wife who are pulled into a world of affairs and masked orgies.

Despite being set in New York City, Kubrick refused to leave his home in London due to a fear of flying and sets were meticulously constructed to mimic real Manhattan streets.

The film was the third and final production that paired Kidman and Cruise, who met on the set of the racing film Days of Thunder in 1989 and married a year later.

The former couple, who share adopted son Connor and daughter Bella Cruise, also appeared together in Ron Howard’s romantic western Far and Away in 1992.

Kidman and Cruise have largely avoided commenting on their marriage since their divorce in 2001 and were initially given joint custody of Bella and Connor.

However, the adopted children, who are devout Scientologists like Tom, opted to live with their father.

Kidman has not been photographed with her two elder children in more than 15 years and typically declines to discuss them in interviews out of respect for their religious beliefs.

Elsewhere in the interview, Kidman mused about “not knowing” a loved one.

“Human beings are devastating,” Kidman added mysteriously.

“And you don’t ever have real access to somebody’s thoughts.

“You may know someone. And you may not. It’s not the things we may want to hear, but it’s deeply honest.”

Following her divorce from Cruise, Kidman remarried country singer Keith Urban in 2006 with whom she has biological daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret Kidman Urban.
