Adam Levine’s return to The Voice was a matter of timing.

 the Maroon 5 frontman detailed his time away from the show — and revealed the reason behind his return.

“I honestly feel like the stars aligned,” the “She Will Be Loved” singer, 45, tells PEOPLE exclusively.

“It was one of those moments where we started talking about it and it felt right… and it hadn’t felt right until now,” he continues.

Levine — who took a step back from the show on season 16 — also found he needed a “break” from being on TV, which he describes as an “interesting and beautiful thing.”

“Doing it for so long, so consistently, for almost eight or nine years of my life, you can definitely start to get burnt,” the “This Love” singer says.

“I did it for this really long period of time so I started to feel like I was kind of getting away from things that matter to me the most, like making music and playing music,” Levine shares.

Reflecting on his time away, Levine says it was “so nice to have one job” but he’s ready to let “a huge part of my life” back in.

“I got lucky because I got these guys,” he adds of fellow coaches Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Bublé and John Legend.

Levine’s exciting return to the show was first announced in June. Prior to his departure in May 2019, the singer-songwriter served as a coach from the show’s premiere alongside Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Levine said he has a renewed idea of his purpose on the show.

“I don’t really see it as a competition anymore, and I know they’re not going to like that, but that’s not what it is. It’s an opportunity for us to share our experiences with the people on the show. And it always has been that,” he shared.

He added, “I mean, you definitely get competitive that those juices flow for sure. But I don’t see it as a competition and I don’t think that I can bring anything other than what I have just from life and a career. And I think that’s really valuable for the people on the show that are needing that experience, or that push that help. And that’s what I think we’re there for.”
