American Horror Story’s Eric Dawson discusses Margot Robbie’s audition experience for the show, and fans figure out which role she went for in 2011.
Eric Dawson, the casting director for 2012’s American Horror Story: Asylum, has recently revealed that Barbie sensation Margot Robbie herself once auditioned for a role in the hit series, and some devoted fans believe that they have worked out which part the actress could have gotten.
In a recent interview with Vinnie Mancuso, Dawson surprised American Horror Story fans with a big revelation — Robbie, a Hollywood A-lister, wanted to get a role in the show’s Season 2 back in 2011. Even though the star impressed the casting director, she ended up not getting the job for a variety of undisclosed reasons. Upon hearing the shocking news, some Reddit users immediately started up a discussion regarding which role Robbie originally auditioned for, and it seems that they all came to an agreement.
While Dawson did not unveil the character who could have been portrayed by Robbie, fans believe that the most obvious choice for the Barbie star would be Grace Bertrand, Kit’s inmate in Briarcliff Manor who murdered her entire family. The iconic role in American Horror Story: Asylum eventually went to Lizzie Brocheré whose performance was then praised by critics and viewers alike. Grace’s character journey was a messy one — from her incarceration in the asylum for her crimes to her relationship with Kit and giving birth to their son, Grace is definitely a fascinating character that Robbie could have been drawn to.
The audience is convinced that this is the part the actress missed out on, and there are several reasons for that. Firstly, Robbie and Brocheré are only five years apart in age, so she seems a likely candidate for the role of Grace age-wise. Secondly, both stars were at the beginning of their careers, which correlates to American Horror Story’s earlier tendency to cast aspiring actors. Finally, Sister Mary Eunice McKee is the only other age-appropriate alternative for Robbie, but it’s likely that this part was written for Lily Rabe specifically, seeing as she was a returning cast member from American Horror Story: Murder House.
Margot Robbie Quickly Rose to International Stardom
Robbie might not have been lucky to land a role in Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s hugely successful anthology series American Horror Story, but she went on to become a world-renowned actress after her initial breakthrough in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013. A decade later, Robbie is a household name, following the success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie where the actress played the titular character, inspired by Mattel’s most famous doll.
