The old adage is that familiarity breeds contempt in sporting events. Does that mean the Super Bowl rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles could be the start of a new rivalry?
The Chiefs and Eagles are set to square off in Super Bowl 59 just two seasons after Kansas City beat Philadelphia with a late field goal in Super Bowl 57 to end the Eagles’ quest for a second Lombardi Trophy. The meeting marks their third overall in the last three seasons, vastly exceeding the typical pace of the long-time AFC and NFC franchises.
In fact, before Super Bowl 57, the Chiefs and Eagles had only met nine total times in a span of 51 years. That included a two-decade period during which the teams did not play one another.
Below is what to know about the Chiefs vs. Eagles history, including who has more recently had the upper hand in the series and how often they have met in the Super Bowl.

Chiefs vs. Eagles last five matchups
Philadelphia won the most recent Chiefs vs. Eagles matchup, a 21-17 “Monday Night Football” victory in Week 11 of the 2023 NFL season. That meeting came less than a year after the Chiefs beat the Eagles in Super Bowl 57 and saw Philadelphia shut out Kansas City in the second half and erase a 10-point halftime deficit to get a win.
Before that Eagles victory, the Chiefs had won four consecutive matchups against the Eagles dating back to 2013. That included a 38-35 Super Bowl 57 win during which Harrison Butker kicked a game-winning field goal with 8 seconds left on the clock to grant Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid their second Super Bowl together.
Below is a look at the results of the five most recent Chiefs vs. Eagles games:
2023: Eagles 21, Chiefs 17
Super Bowl 57: Chiefs 38, Eagles 35
2021: Chiefs 42, Eagles 30
2017: Chiefs 27, Eagles 20
2013: Chiefs 26, Eagles 16
Chiefs vs. Eagles record
Because of their recent success, the Chiefs own an advantage over the Eagles in their all-time series. The teams have met 11 times overall and Kansas City has posted a 6-5 record in those contests. That includes a 4-1 record against Philadelphia under Reid, who coached the Eagles from 1999-2012.

Chiefs vs. Eagles playoff history
The Chiefs and Eagles have only met once in the playoffs since their first meeting in 1972. That came in Super Bowl 57, which was played in 2023 the culmination of the 2022 NFL playoffs.
The Chiefs overcame a 24-14 halftime deficit in that Super Bowl thanks to 17 fourth-quarter points and three touchdown passes by Mahomes, who completed 21 of 27 passes for 182 yards in the contest. Jalen Hurts completed 27 of 38 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown while running for 70 yards and three scores on 15 carries, but it wasn’t enough for Philadelphia to earn the win in the second-highest-scoring Super Bowl of all time.
The Eagles will be hoping to avoid a similar fate in 2025. They return most of the same offensive core but are significantly better at running back thanks to Saquon Barkley this year. They also figure to be better on defense for Super Bowl 59, as they had the NFL’s second-best scoring defense during the 2024 regular season.
