Glen Powell has major career goals that he wants to achieve in Hollywood, but it might come at a sacrifice in his dating life. The 35-year-old actor is riding high from the success of Anyone But You and Hit Man, but he wants to be as famous as Tom Cruise — and that might be hurting his love life.

“The big red flag around who he’s become after all his success is this mission he’s on to become the biggest movie star in the world,” a Life & Style insider pointed out. “Sure, he’s learned from the greats like his idol Tom Cruise, but he’s turning people off with his single-mindedness.” Cruise is well-known for his movie star ambitions early on in his career, Rob Lowe shared memories of their time together during The Outsiders audition process.

“First time I ever stayed at The Plaza Hotel. We check in and Tom finds out that we’re sharing a room, and just goes ballistic,” Lowe revealed on the podcast, Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard in 2020. He wasn’t offended that the future Top Gun star didn’t want to share a room with him because he saw a rare drive in the young actor. “To me, what’s great about the story is, there’s certain people who have always been who they are, and that element of them has powered them to where they are today and the rest is history,” Lowe explained. “And the notion that an 18-year-old actor with a walk-on part in Endless Love, and like, a seventh lead in Taps, could have that kind of, like, wherewithal? I remember going, ‘Wow, this guy is the real deal.’”

Powell has that same Cruise drive, and he looks up to him as a mentor after working with him on Top Gun: Maverick, but putting his career first isn’t helping his dating situation. The Life & Style source seems to think his ego is getting in the way. “It’s hard to form a serious and intimate partnership when you’re as in love with yourself as Glen is,” they criticized him. “Right now, his fix for this is to move back to Texas, but he’s only going to face the same issues with the women he comes across there.” Ouch — is this an ex-girlfriend dishing these details?

While it’s great to have a global career like Cruise, it does come at a cost. It’s something Cruise has struggled with after three marriages to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes — and that might not be something Powell wants to model his personal life after. “If [Powell] really wants a wife and a family, he needs to show some humility and he needs to show that he’s living for more than just himself and his suddenly hot career,” the insider summed up. That might be wise non-Cruise advice to take!
