Senators on Tuesday sought to formally commend Sofronio Vasquez III for being the first Filipino and first Asian to win the international singing competition “The Voice USA.”

In Senate Resolution No. (SRN) 1262, Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada recognized Vasquez’s demonstration of relentless perseverance, determination, and resilience in pursuing his dreams, not letting rejections and prior failures derail his ultimate goal of making a name and leaving a mark in the music industry.
“Vasquez’s inspiring journey represents the aspirations and unwavering spirit of many of our kababayan (countrymen) and promising young artists as his triumph reminds us how dreams can be achieved with persistence, hard work, and continuous learning,” Estrada said in a news release.
“Vasquez embodied the incomparable Filipino vocal prowess and showcased the nation’s fervent passion for music before the international stage, bringing prestige and honor to the entire country,” he added.
Senators Imee Marcos and Joel Villanueva also filed SRNs 1260 and 1259, respectively, seeking Vasquez’s recognition.
Senator Marcos said the journey of Vasquez stands as a powerful example of how one’s talent and determination can ultimately lead to success.
“Despite having been rejected many times and going through difficult adversities in life, Vasquez used these to turn the chair around which got him the best redemption anyone could ever imagine,” she said.
Villanueva, meanwhile, said Vasquez’s talent and performance displayed the prowess of Filipino singers who are a force to be reckoned with in singing competitions.
“Sofronio Vasquez’s outstanding win brought immense pride and joy to his fellow Filipinos in the Philippines and across the globe,” he said.
Vasquez, who once worked as a dental assistant in Utica, New York, rose to stardom after being crowned the grand champion of The Voice USA Season 26.
The finale, which aired on December 11, 2024, saw Vasquez deliver powerful performances of “Unstoppable” and “A Million Dreams,” beating four other finalists: Shye, Sydney Sterlace, Danny Joseph, and Jeremy Beloate.
Known as “The Filipino Phenom,” Vasquez impressed audiences and coaches early in the competition with his rendition of “I’m Going Down” during the Blind Audition stage.
His performance earned him a rare four-chair turn from the show’s superstar coaches: rapper Snoop Dogg, country singer Reba McEntire, rock icon Gwen Stefani, and jazz vocalist Michael Bublé.
Vasquez ultimately chose Bublé as his mentor, a partnership that guided him through the competition’s challenges.
Before his breakout success, Vasquez had experienced setbacks in the Philippine music scene, including unsuccessful attempts to pass auditions for The Voice Philippines.
He was also known for participating in “Tawag ng Tanghalan,” a popular segment on a local variety show.
Vasquez’s journey from local performer to international champion culminated in his victory, where he earned the highest number of votes from viewers across the United States.
Along with the prestigious title, he took home a USD100,000 cash prize and a record deal with Universal Music Group.
