We have reason to believe the story might be true given that Cruise himself admitted he takes public transportation in the UK while trying to hide his identity with glasses and a hat.

However, keeping his privacy really isn’t anything new. The same held true at the start of his career while he was filming the iconic film, The Outsiders.

According to Rob Lowe, Cruise went ballistic over the two sharing a room during the film. For Lowe, staying at The Plaza Hotel was a major deal. On the flip side, Tom scoffed at the arrangements given he wasn’t able to get his own room.

Lowe revealed, “All of the L.A. people survived the L.A. auditions, and then the hand-picked people had to go to New York to face the New York version. So it was me and Tom Cruise and Emilio [Estevez] and C. Thomas Howell.”

He continues, “[It was the] first time I ever stayed at The Plaza Hotel, and we check-in and Tom finds out that we’re sharing a room and just goes ballistic.”

“I remember one time I was there and there was this 14-year-old kid, this girl was there. And everyone was looking at their phones and I just saw her, I looked over, my head’s down I got my baseball cap, and she’s just staring at me like this.”

“She just looked around the subway like this, and then looked back to me, and I went [puts a finger in front of lips]. And the look she gave me, she just looked around, she was like [smiling], took her iPhone and went ‘click’ and was like ‘Alright.’ I’ll never forget her.”

As expected, Cruise’s security team wasn’t fond of his decision.

“I do go on transportation. My security loves that when I do that. The Tube in England. I do that. Like, sometimes I put on my hat and my earphones and I’ll just go in and get on the Tube if I want to get to the studio.”
