Is Tom Cruise Really Up for His Toughest Task Yet? Mission: Impossible 8 Popcorn Bucket Set to Push Boundaries

Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning - Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Ferguson

Tom Cruise has accepted a new mission ahead of the release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and it could be one of his toughest yet. That would be the small matter of personally designing a popcorn bucket for the movie. In the last couple of years, popcorn buckets have taken on a life of their own, with all big releases having to come up with an appropriate – and often elaborate – container for patrons to purchase and keep forever. From alien heads to dubious-looking sandworms, these have come in all shapes and sizes…but for Cruise, the process of developing one for his next run out as Ethan Hunt is one that he wants to oversee himself.

Not content with throwing himself off cliffs and out of planes in the name of entertainment, you would think that the creation of a simple snack box would be too…well, boring for the adrenaline-seeking Hollywood star. However, speaking to Time, AMC’s director of food and beverage product strategy, Rob Bennett, revealed that Cruise really wanted to be hands-on with the creation process. Although he would not reveal exactly what the design is, he set high expectations by saying:

“But we nailed it.”

While it may seem a long way from his death-defying stunt work, Cruise is well known for liking to have his finger in all the pies when it comes to the overall experience audiences get when they go to his movies. Recently, the attention being given to popcorn buckets has increased massively, meaning that it is just as much a part of the movie as the action on screen.

Bennett went on to note that it is not just Cruise getting in on the act. He revealed that Tim Burton had a hand in the design of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice buckets, and James Cameron had the final say on the appearance of the Avatar popcorn bucket that will accompany Avatar: Fire & Ash. Perhaps someone should have asked Denis Villeneuve before putting out that Dune bucket.

Mission: Impossible Has a Big Task Ahead

Away from the world of money-making accessories, the biggest focus for all cinema releases is how much the movies make during their theatrical run. The success of Mission: Impossible -The Final Reckoning is essential for the franchise after the underperformance of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning last year.

While the movie was not a bomb by any means, taking over $570 million, it performed poorly compared to Rogue Nation ($688 million) and Fallout ($791 million), but it also had a budget between $50-70 million higher than either of those movies due to its prolonged and delayed production. The budget for The Final Reckoning is reportedly a staggering $400 million, and that could be the downfall of the film’s profitability as it would need to break the $1 billion barrier in order to turn any kind of profit.

Cruise will hit the big screen on May 23, 2025, bringing Ethan Hunt back for what could be one final outing if the rumors are to be believed. Whether he will go out in the same unexpected and final way as Daniel Craig departed the James Bond franchise is something fans could well want to discover on the big screen. That could potentially help push The Final Reckoning’s takings to a more appealing level than its predecessor.
