At the same time, Carrey also proved that he remains the master of one art that makes him a far superior actor than even Tom Cruise.
Jim Carrey’s Sonic 3 First Look Has Fans Praising His New Transformation
Jim Carrey first appeared as Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, the archnemesis of the titular hero in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise in the 2020 film. He later reprised the role for the 2022 sequel. After plenty of speculation amidst Carrey’s plan to retire from acting, it was confirmed in early 2024 that he would appear in the threequel.

In August 2024, it was revealed with the third installment’s trailer that Carrey would additionally be playing the role of Professor Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s Grandfather in the upcoming film. Fans reacted to the first look at Carrey’s new character in Sonic 3 on social media and here is what they had to say.
As the tweets indicate, fans were hyped for the third installment after Carrey’s look was revealed. Most fans were glad the actor had decided not to retire and returned for another round. Moreover, Carrey potentially playing two characters in the movie also excited fans.
Above all, fans were impressed with Carrey’s chameleon-like quality, when it came to transforming himself into a different character. Carrey’s transformation quickly became the talk of the town as the actor suited up tp play Gerald Robotnik who is bound to play a key role in Sonic 3.
Jim Carrey Once Again Proves Not Even Tom Cruise Can’t Beat Him at Transformations
With his return to the Sonic franchise, Jim Carrey has once again proved that he is the king of transformations. Although Carrey is notorious for his method-acting antics, the two time Golden Globe Award-winning actor is known for dissolving into the characters he portrays on the big screen.

Carrey’s filmography includes movies such as The Mask and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which saw him play characters with a mean streak. Meanwhile, Carrey also impressed critics and audiences with more dramatic roles in movies like The Truman Show and Man on the Moon.
In contrast, even Tom Cruise has struggled to consistently morph himself into different characters, across genres to become unrecognizable like Carrey. While Cruise made commendable efforts with movies such as Interview with the Vampire and Tropic Thunder, the criticism of essentially playing the same character in most movies has followed him throughout his career.
With his upcoming dual role in Sonic 3, Carrey has reinstated himself as one of the most versatile actors capable of blending into any role. Moreover, despite having played the character of Robotnik twice before, Carrey’s return has sparked a wave of excitement among the fans, further highlighting the popularity of his transformations.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled to release on December 20, 2024.
