Katie Holmes is beaming with pride as her daughter Suri Cruise is getting ready to go to university.

The 18-year-old, who Katie shares with her ex-husband Tom Cruise, is reportedly enrolling in Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. The new chapter in Suri’s life comes amid her estrangement from her father.

Katie acknowledged she’s going to “miss” her daughter’s daily presence but said she is thrilled at the idea of her embracing the full college experience to “find herself”. Opening up about Suri’s enrolment, she shared: “I’m proud of my daughter.”

Speaking to Town and Country Magazine Katie added: “Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her and I’m happy.” Reflecting on her own college days at Columbia University, the Dawson’s Creek star said: “I remember being this age, this time of beginnings.”

Katie said she can’t wait for her daughter to enter on a journey of self-discovery, saying: “It’s exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that.” Katie even joked about her own social life, saying: “The members of my book club are going to get annoyed hearing from me.”

“I’ll be like, ‘Let’s meet once a week’,” she added. Katie’s comments come after Suri has made attempts to distance herself from her father after years of no contact.

Suri dropped Tom’s last name when she turned 18. She’s instead going by Suri Noelle, taking on the middle name of her mom. Suri used her new name during her graduation ceremony from the distinguished LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts.

She was previously addressed as Suri Noelle during her portrayal of Morticia Addams in her school’s rendition of The Addams Family: A New Musical last December. Amid the estrangement, a source has claimed that for the last 11 years, “Tom has chosen not to see Suri”. They added: “It was entirely Tom’s decision not to see Suri.”

Tony Ortega, an expert on Tom’s Scientology, added: “Tom has proven over and over again that his No.1 loyalty is to [his religion] and David Miscavige.” Speaking to In Touch magazine, he said that as the years passed, it “became more and more obvious Tom had completely cut Suri out of his life.”
