“I went through my own personal thing when my son got sick, and I couldn’t get through it,” the “Sway” singer shared with contestant Sloane Simon.
Michael Bublé got emotional on “The Voice” while coaching contestant Sloane Simon during the show’s Nov. 26 episode.
Ahead of Simon performing Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!” during the playoffs, Simon was practicing the song with Bublé and his playoff advisor, singer Carly Pearce. In a separate interview, Simon explained how the lyrics to Roan’s song related to her personal life as her dad’s health continued to decline back at home.
“The lyric, You have to stop the world just to stop the feeling,’ kind of encapsulates a lot about how me and my family feel about my dad,” she said. “My dad isn’t doing great. His oncologist said he had anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks left, and it’s tough not being with my family, but he wants me to be here.
“My mom wants me to be here. My sister, my brother, everybody wants me to be here because this opportunity being here gives them something to be excited for, too,” she continued.
During training, Simon told Bublé that she worries a lot about her father and was “a bit shaken” during her last performance.
At that point, Bublé opened up about how her personally connected with what Simon was going through, as he reflected on when his son Noah, now 11, was diagnosed with lung cancer in late 2016. Noah is now in remission.
“I went through my own personal thing when my son got sick, and I couldn’t get through it,” the “Sway” singer said. “I just couldn’t, and that’s OK … It’s a show, and it’s not as big as you and as important as you and your trajectory and your journey. This is just a part of it.”
“Thank you,” Simon replied.
In her interview, she added, “Michael, relating to me on such a personal level was definitely very encouraging, very heartfelt.”
At the end of the practice session, Bublé gave Simon a hug.
“I’ll be praying for dad and for all of it,” he told her. “You know I will.”
During her performance on “The Voice,” Bublé was seen clapping along as Simon sang “Good Luck, Babe!” on stage. Once her performance was over, Bublé revealed that Simon’s father had died shortly before she took the stage.
“I know how brave you are,” he said. “I mean, I knew you and your family were going through stuff. You just lost your dad.”
“My dad told me I was crazy to turn back, so I’m here and I sang for him,” she said.
At that point, coach Snoop Dogg got off his chair to give Simon a hug, while fellow coach Gwen Stefani cried over the sweet moment.
“Oh my God,” Stefani said while wiping tears away from her eyes.
