Nicole Kidman made some rare remarks about her marriage to ex-husband Tom Cruise while reflecting on their movie Eyes Wide Shut.
The A-list exes starred in the 1999 movie together, which was directed and written by Stanley Kubrick.
In a retrospective for the movie’s 25th anniversary, Nicole recalled working on the project with her ex. She was also asked if Stanley “mined” her relationship with Tom for their characters.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Nicole said that she, Tom and Stanley spent a lot of time together before they started filming. It was all about bonding.
“When Tom and I first started with Stanley, it was at his home, and we didn’t even go over to the sets at Pinewood [Studios],” she recalled. “Six, eight weeks passed, and we’re wondering, ‘Are we ever going to start?’ And we just wouldn’t start. We were getting comfortable with each other, comfortable enough to throw out ideas. For that scene, we improvised the beginning of it through the rehearsals.”
The movie famously filmed for nearly two years. Nicole said that she and Tom spent that time sharing a studio on set.
“We had a home 10 minutes away, but we lived in that trailer. Tom and I shared it because Stanley would say, ‘You’re not each getting a trailer. We can’t afford it,’” she said. “S had a smaller area because he was running stuff. And he’d play video games. That was when [Minesweeper] was big. So there was a lot of that.”
Did she feel that Stanley took inspiration from her marriage?
“I suppose he was mining it,” she told the outlet. “There were ideas he was interested in. He’d ask a lot of questions. But he had a strong sense of the story he was telling. I do remember him saying, ‘Triangles are hard. You have to tread carefully when it’s a triangle.’ Because one person could feel ganged up on. But he was aware of that and knew how to manage us.”
If you weren’t aware, Nicole and Tom were married from 1990 until 2001. The actress previously revealed if she regretted their marriage. She also called out a question about their marriage as sexist once.
