The Internet recently buzzed with the thought of seeing the classic horror series, Friday the 13th, on our screens once more. Fans went into frenzy as whispers grew that Hollywood megastar, Charlize Theron, might be stepping into the bone-chilling role of the main baddie, Mrs Voorhees, in the series. However, suspense remains as the proposed series known as Crystal Lake is still on hold. This leaves us on the edge of our seats, wondering what’s coming next.
The Tale of the Friday the 13th Series
Those who love Friday the 13th have enjoyed 12 films full of chills and thrills, starting in 1980 and going through to 2009. Even though critics were not the biggest fans, the series was adored by its audience. This series tells the spooky story of Mrs Voorhees and her son Jason, who became iconic characters in the horror genre. After the last movie came out in 2009, fans couldn’t wait to return to the enthralling world of Friday the 13th.
The Dream of Crystal Lake
Fans got excited when news about a new series called Crystal Lake surfaced. The dream grew when it was revealed that top-notch companies Peacock and A24 were on board to support this cool new project. It got even more exciting when they said Charlize Theron, an actress who has an Oscar under her belt, would star as the creepy Mrs Voorhees.
Waiting for Crystal Lake
However, it seems the Crystal Lake series won’t see the light just yet. Bryan Fuller, who is behind the series Hannibal, didn’t manage to take this concept beyond the initial stage. It’s rumored that Fuller and his colleague, Jim Danger Gray, both had to leave the project. The trouble seems to stem from differences over the budget. Reportedly, Fuller’s request for $9.6 million for each episode didn’t go down well with A24 and Peacock, causing a shakeup and putting the series on hold.
Theron as Mrs Voorhees That Could Have Been
With the series lingering in uncertainty, fans and Theron admirers can only assume what her take on the role would have been. Theron, praised for her ability to portray complex characters, was set to breathe life into the heartless murderer. This would have made it her second time playing a serial killer since her Oscar-getting performance in Monster.
Theron’s Mad Max Disappointment
Theron has recently faced a setback with another popular series, Mad Max. She starred in Mad Max: Fury Road with Tom Hardy and stunned fans with her impressive portrayal of the character Furiosa. But when they announced a prequel, Theron found out her role was being given to a younger actor. Although she felt let down, she handled it well, wishing the franchise all the best.
What’s Next for Friday the 13th?
The temporary pause on the Friday the 13th series has left fans and Theron herself in suspense. Will Theron get the chance to add Mrs Voorhees to her array of characters, or is her Friday the 13th experience nothing but a Hollywood dream that disappeared with the tide? Basically, we have to wait and see what comes our way!
