Twisters is hoping to blow away the box office competition when it hits theaters on July 17, 2024, but before it makes its long-awaited debut in North America, the film had its European premiere on June 8, and Tom Cruise was in attendance to cheer on his Top: Gun Maverick co-star, Glen Powell. Cruise and Powell starred together in the 2022 production, which would go on to earn more than $1 billion dollars at the box office and cement Powell as one of Hollywood’s newest leading men.

As per People, Cruise was in attendance at the Cineworld Leicester Square in London when Twisters premiered on June 8, and following its Los Angeles screening on July 11, star Anthony Ramos spoke to the outlet, telling them what it was like to see Tom Cruise freak out while watching the film. “He keeps hitting me,” he said.

“Glen was sitting behind me, my brother was next to me, and Tom was behind my brother. Tom just kept hitting me the whole entire movie . After the third time I turned back around, like, ‘ Yo, Tom Cruise is bugging out right now! ‘ He keeps hitting me.”

Ramon stars as Javi in Twisters, whose character lures Daisy Edgar-Jones’ Kate Cooper back into the fray of tornado chasing in order to test out a new tracking system. The 32-year-old star would go on to say that Tom Cruise was just eager to express the joy he felt seeing his Top Gun: Maverick co-star in what is hoping to be the smash hit of the summer.

“He keeps hitting me because he’s excited about different moments , and he’s laughing. He’s just laughing out loud the whole entire film. He wasn’t afraid to express himself. I was super grateful about that .”

Cruise, who “hugged it out” with Ramon after the movie, would celebrate the occasion by posting a photo on his Instagram account featuring himself and Powell with big smiles on their faces. The caption simply reads, “Fun night with friends, watching a movie!!” Check it out below.

Twisters Is Hoping to Open Big at the Box Office

Opening on May 10, 1996, Twister, starring Helen Hunt, Cary Elwes, and the late Bill Paxton, managed to take in $41.1 million its opening weekend, and would ultimately go on to earn a worldwide total of $495 million against a budget of $92 million. Those might be a lot of numbers to process, but the long-awaited sequel to the disaster classic is hoping to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor.

According to early reports from Universal, Twisters is on track to earn anywhere between $40 and $45 million its opening weekend, and that’s figuring conservatively based on current pre-sale ticket numbers. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, some – such as The Quorum – are projecting Twisters could earn upwards of $60 million, which would be a massive win for the movie in today’s current market.

Whatever the case may be, there’s no denying that anticipations are high for Twisters, (which features a cameo by Bill Paxton’s son), as audiences hope that it manages to capture just a fraction of what made the original such a fun movie to see in theaters, and they’ll feel the same excitement Tom Cruise did while watching it.

Twisters hits theaters on July 17, 2024, and you can check out the trailer below. 1996’s Twister is available to stream on Max .
