Paralympic swimmer Ali Truwit, who is from Connecticut, won two silver medals at the 2024 games in Paris and then the swimming star received a call from Tom Cruise who called her the “coolest thing ever.”
Truwit, who is from Darien, won silver in the women’s 400m freestyle S10 on Thursday, then won another silver in the women’s 100m backstroke S10 on Friday.
The 24-year-old’s achievements come just over a year after she lost her foot and part of her leg in a shark attack.
She placed second in the women’s 400m freestyle S10 final on Thursday, behind the reigning gold medalist in the event, Canada’s Aurélie Rivard. On Friday, Truwit took silver in the women’s 100m backstroke S10, finishing just 0.62 seconds after Hungary’s Bianka Pap.

What is the 400m freestyle S10 and 100m backstroke S10?

Truwit medaled in the events in the S10 classification, which is one of the categories for athletes with physical impairments, according to World Para Swimming. The ‘S’ prefix in the classification is used for the freestyle, butterfly and backstroke events. The classes are numbered 1-10 depending on how the impairment affects swimming.
The S10 classification is for swimmers who have affected movement at a low level in the legs, at a moderate level in the hip joint or feet, at a high level in one foot or minor limb absence, according to LEXI Global.
Who is Ali Truwit?
Ali Truwit is a Paralympic swimmer from Darien, Connecticut.
Truwit graduated from Yale University in 2023, where she was a four-year letter winner while swimming, according to her Team USA bio. Two days after graduating from Yale, she lost her foot and part of her leg in a shark attack while vacationing in Turks and Caicos.
After her silver finishes, actor Tom Cruise called Truwit to invite her to his movie set, the TODAY show posted on Instagram.
“This is the coolest thing ever,” Truwit said.
“You are the coolest thing ever,” Cruise responded.
