Next year, Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie plan to realize the World War II film “Broadsword” as part of Cruise’s new Warner deal. Two notable co-stars are already confirmed.

Currently, Tom Cruise’s full attention is on the next, still untitled “Mission: Impossible” film. However, next year, the superstar aims to tackle new projects, including a collaboration with Alejandro González Iñárritu and a project known among fans as “The Gnarly Movie”—a gritty, R-rated action film that Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie have been discussing for some time. Many had long speculated that this project could be a remake of the 1977 Clint Eastwood hit “The Gauntlet.”

It now turns out that the project is “Broadsword,” an original script written by Christopher McQuarrie, set in World War II. It tells the story of a special operations mission during which a Marine captain is stranded in France and must fight his way through enemy territory to complete his mission. Henry Cavill and Marion Cotillard are reportedly cast as co-stars. The film is part of the recently concluded deal between Cruise and Warner Bros.

Cavill previously worked with Cruise in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and is currently starring in a World War II film by Guy Ritchie, “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” about a special operations mission, currently number two on the Prime charts. Cotillard will be working with Tom Cruise for the first time but has previously starred in a major Hollywood World War II film, “Allied,” directed by Robert Zemeckis, alongside Brad Pitt. Tom Cruise himself played Count von Stauffenberg in “Valkyrie,” directed by Bryan Singer and written by Chris McQuarrie.

Following this, it looks like “Top Gun 3” could finally be in the works. Additionally, a sequel to “Edge of Tomorrow” with director Doug Liman and a space film also directed by Liman are on Tom Cruise’s project slate.
