In 2015, screenwriter Max Landis sold his then-newest script Deeper to David Goyer’s production company, Phantom Four. Despite MGM picking it up the following year, nothing’s really come of the project since then. Various A-list stars like Bradley Cooper, Idris Elba, and Gal Gadot were attached before dropping out before being impeded further by allegations of sexual assault against Landis in 2017. Now, it seems that the project is coming back to life once again, this time via Tom Cruise and Doug Liman.
Liman recently hosted a screening of the upcoming documentary Gaucho Gaucho, where he told Showbiz411 he and Cruise were collaborating on a “scary movie,” something he said neither he or Cruise have ever done before. (Damn, leave The Mummy reboot out to dry, huh?) As ComingSoon noted, the Cruise/Liman reunion was first reported earlier this year by Daniel Richtmann, who claimed Warner Bros. Discovery would produce the film, as the studio’s already working with Cruise on Judy, his upcoming collaboration with Alejandro G. Iñàrritu.
In case you’ve forgotten, the plot of Deeper (at least, as it was back in the day) centers on a shamed NASA astronaut who’s gone underwater to check out a newly discovered oceanic trench believed to be the new lowest point on the planet. During his trek, the astronaut ends up in a battle of physical and mental wits against “mysterious forces.” It’s been previously likened to The Martian and Gravity in terms of tone, and you gotta that comparison still holds water nowadays. We’ve seen Tom Cruise take the plunge before, but if this movie is finally happening, it may be awhile before we see it: between Judy, Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning, and launching his own ass to space for his and Liman’s other movie, he’s pretty busy.
