Tom Cruise is a pro at making hardcore stunts look stylish (and easy). He’s made a career out of scaling buildings, jumping off motorbikes, and clinging onto helicopters, all while looking remarkably chill about it. And it turns out he can do that while watching hardcore sports, too.

TC, like every second famous guy on the planet, is currently in Paris to catch some of the Olympics, which kicked off over the weekend. He was spotted yesterday watching USA champ Simone Biles tear up the gymnastics event, wearing a typical slick fit including some dark-wash denim jeans, a pair of leather lace-up boots and a white polo shirt. The 62-year-old (!) finished off the fit with his Rolex Day-Date — an up-close inspection appears to show a glimmering white meteorite dial, adding another fresh touch — as well as his wear-everywhere aviator sunglasses.

The polo is, of course, the star of the show (after Biles’ bold defiance of the laws of gravity). The shirt itself features the eternal camp collar as well as a pointelle-knitted open texture, making the shirt appear a bit breezier than its close-knit counterpart. It’s relaxed. It’s summer on the rocks in Marseille. It’s, dare we say, a bit sexy — and it all comes down to that open knit.

Usually when we see polos, that super fine, close knit can threaten to veer them into corporate territory. No one would blame you if you’ve reached the limits of polo shirt fatigue. Nowadays, you can’t skim an Apple AirBook across a central London business area without hitting at least four guys in polos. Which is all the more reason you should be getting specific about yours, opting for finer details that elevate you above the boardrooms. From a shorter sleeve, an interesting placket on the collar, a bold colour or Cruise’s preference of open knit, swerving the classic just a touch does more than you realise.
