Tom Cruise’s daughter Suri Cruise is thought to be following in her famous father’s footsteps as she considers careers in acting and music.

Suri, 18, has been seen carrying a guitar whilst out with friends in New York City, as it is thought she might be considering a musical career as well as an acting one. The 18 year old, who is set to graduate high school this summer, was seen carrying a huge beige instrument bag from music brand Taylor as she walked with friends in new York.

Wearing a beige bandeau top, denim shorts and tan cowboy boots, Suri looked happy and carefree as she wandered the streets of the Big Apple. Whilst Suri is estranged from her father and lives with mother Katie Holmes, who was granted sole custody, it seems she’s still taking career inspiration from her famous parents.

Tom, who is known for his acting in films such as Top Gun and the Mission Impossible franchise, has also ventured into the musical side of things when he’s previously taken to the stage as a singer and rockstar in the Rock of Ages musical. Mother Katie is also an actress and known for roles in shows such as Dawson’s Creek and films including Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Earlier this month it was announced that Tom’s estranged daughter Suri has officially ditched her dad’s surname as she adopts a quiet life away from any connection to her Hollywood father. The father-daughter duo have reportedly have had a strained relationship for years with the Mission Impossible star recently missing her 18th birthday party last month while filming in London.

Suri’s decision to drop her ‘Cruise’ surname is thought to be a moment of rebellion, according to a US psychiatrist. In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, expert Carole Lieberman, M.D. explained: “Children ‘drop’ their last name to rebel against their parents. They’re angry and resentful over some hurt from childhood.”

She continued: “When they get older, they get back at their parents by ‘dropping’ them as a way to punish their parents for all the painful memories they’ve held onto and obsessed over for years,” and added: “These memories could be something as seemingly minor as their parent not coming to all their games in high school, or something major like their father divorcing their mother and going on to have another family.”

Tom’s estrangement from his daughter Suri comes after Katie was awarded “sole custody” of her in during the famous pair’s divorce settlement back in July of 2012. After the settlement, a source later revealed to Heat Magazine that Tom had made a deal to “allow her [Suri] and her mother to live their own lives because that was what Katie wanted.”

Now Suri is 18, it’s also thought Tom’s payments of $400,000 per year to ex wife Katie for child support will now cease. Tom and Suri have had an estranged relationship for many years, with the last photo of the father and daughter together was in 2012 a year after Tom and Katie’s divorce was finalised.
