Since then, the 61-year-old has starred in over 70 movies from his indie darling days in the 1990s with auteur directors, to blockbuster stardom with Pirates of the Caribbean and beyond. Film fans on IMDb have ranked his films and it turns out that Depp has never watched No 1.

10. Dead Man (1995)

Johnny Depp stars as a meek account on the run for murder in this monochrome acid Western. During his life as a fugitive, he stumbles upon a Native American spirit-guide called Nobody who believes him to be the reincarnation of his namesake, the English poet William Blake.

Terry Gilliam’s adaptation of Hunter S Thompson’s novel stars Depp as the gonzo journalist himself alongside Benicia del Toro as Dr Gonzo. This cult classic follows the drug-addled pair on their misadventures through Las Vegas.

Depp stars as real-life US drug trafficker George Jung, with Penélope Cruz as his wife Mirtha. Adapted from Bruce Porter’s 1993 book of the same name, this crime drama about an American cocaine kingpin explores Jung’s connections to drug lords Pablo Escobar and Carlos Lehder Rivas.

2. Platoon (1986)

Oliver Stone based this film on his own Vietnam War experiences, to counter the pro-military position of John Wayne’s The Green Berets. Platoon follows Charlie Sheen’s US Army volunteer as his Platoon Sergeant and Squad Leader argue over the morality of the war itself. Co-starring Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker and Depp in a smaller role as an interpreter, the movie was praised by critics and was a box office success before winning four Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. Platoon also features in the Top 10 Vietnam War movies ranked.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

What else could be No 1? Given the last big Hollywood pirate movie was such a bomb it shut down a studio, not to mention the suits’ meddling over Depp’s creative decisions as Jack Sparrow, it’s a miracle this movie ended up an all-time classic that birthed a billion-dollar franchise. One, of course, that would be nothing without the star’s Oscar-nominated role as his drunken swashbuckler. And yes, according to the horse’s mouth during his court case against Amber Heard, Depp said of the first Pirates movie: “I didn’t see it. But I believe the film did pretty well.”
