Two days before Patrick Mahomes is set to lead the Kansas City Chiefs into battle against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC championship game, the three-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback has received devastating news.
Mahomes’ grandfather, Randy Martin, entered hospice care Friday morning, according to Mahomes’ mother. This news comes as the Chiefs prepare to play Sunday with the aim of reaching their third Super Bowl in a row and become the first NFL team to win three consecutive championships in Super Bowl 59 on Feb. 9.
Patrick Mahomes’ grandfather enters hospice care
Mahomes’s mother, Randi Mahomes, shared Friday morning that her father, the quarterback’s grandfather, has entered hospice.
“My dad is in hospice and I’m lost for words,” Randi Mahomes posted on her Instagram story. The post included a photo of herself with her father and three praying hands emojis.

Underneath the text, Randi Mahomes cited Colossians 3:20, a Bible passage instructing children to obey their parents to please God.
She has already lost her mother, Debbie Bates Martin, who died on April 5, 2023, two months after the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.

On Sept. 1, 2020, Mahomes proposed to his high school sweetheart Brittany Matthews, and the couple married on March 12, 2022.
On Jan. 12, 2025, the Chiefs quarterback and Brittany Mahomes welcomed their third child. Golden Raye Mahomes joins her two older siblings, Sterling Skye Mahomes, almost four years old, and Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III, who was born on Nov. 29, 2022.
During a Jan. 14 press conference, Mahomes said it’s “a lot of fun” to be a dad of three.
“It’s been cool to welcome another baby girl to the family and see how my other kids reacted to her, and have a baby sister and stuff like that,” he said.
The quarterback’s father, Pat Mahomes, pitched in the MLB for 11 seasons with six different teams. The 54-year-old has two sons with his ex-wife Randi Mahomes.
Their other son, Jackson Mahomes, 24, is a social media influencer with over 1.1 million TikTok followers. Last March, he was sentenced to six months’ probation due to an alleged assault on a woman.

His grandmother on his mom’s side died two years ago, and his grandfather entered hospice care Friday morning.
His paternal grandfather, Johnny Mahomes, worked for an oil company and his grandmother Cindy was a nurse. When Pat Mahomes Sr. was seven, however, his mother was partly paralyzed in a car accident and could no longer continue her nursing career.
Randi Mahomes, Pat Mahomes Sr., Brittany Mahomes and their two older children will all likely be present for Kansas City’s conference championship clash Sunday.
