Known for his versatility and dedication to undergoing drastic physical changes for his roles, Vikram recently spoke about his desire to embody the best of both Daniel Day-Lewis and Tom Cruise.
Tamil star “Chiyaan” Vikram talks about legendary actors Daniel Day-Lewis, Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr.
Tamil star “Chiyaan” Vikram is currently revelling in the success of his latest outing, the action-adventure Thangalaan, helmed by Pa Ranjith. The film, which has grossed over Rs 100 crore globally, has been widely praised, particularly for its performances, with Vikram receiving significant acclaim. Known for his versatility and dedication to undergoing drastic physical changes for his roles, Vikram recently spoke about his desire to embody the best of both Daniel Day-Lewis and Tom Cruise, while admitting he cannot be a Robert Downey Jr despite greatly admiring him.
During his appearance on IMDb’s Icons Only segment, Vikram said, “Take, for instance, Robert Downey Jr; he’s a star, he’s a superstar. But you can see him in all his films; he always has that nonchalance. Even as Iron Man, he has that selfish, offensive humour, and he’s stylish. He has a unique way of doing it.”
“But Daniel Day-Lewis is someone I really identify with because he immerses himself in his roles and does something different. I like that. At the same time, I also want to be like Tom Cruise and Tom Hardy,” he added.
A recipient of the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in director Bala’s Pithamagan (2003), Vikram is often compared to English actor Christian Bale for his intense physical transformations, as seen in films like Sethu (1999), Anniyan (2005), Raavanan (2010), Deiva Thirumagal (2011), I (2015), and the Ponniyin Selvan franchise.
In his review of Thangalaan, The Indian Express’ Avinash Ramachandran wrote, “Pa Ranjith conjures up a familiar world with familiar beats but gives it a neo-magical touch that reimagines the plight of the oppressed by giving their thoughts a platform, and meaning to their suffering.”
