Post Malone has quickly established himself as one of the most talked-about artists in the industry with his chart-busting songs and high-profile collaborations with juggernauts like Taylor Swift and Beyonce. The Fortnight singer also grew up idolizing country music legend Blake Shelton and has recently collaborated with him for Pour Me A Drink in his upcoming album, F-1 Trillion.

In an interview with American Songwriterpublished on July 29, Blake Shelton revealed that Post Malone grew up thinking that his song Austin was written about him. Malone’s real name is Austin Richard Post and his mother would often tell him that Blake Shelton’s chart-busting song was written about the rapper.
“Post’s real name is Austin, and he told me that when he was a kid, his mom told him that that song was written about him. That’s what he told me, and he said he believed it. His mom was, I guess, the country music fan in the family, and his dad was the rock guy. So, I guess that’s how Post Malone was created,” Shelton told American Songwriter.
Released in 2009, Austin currently has more than 55 million views on YouTube and is one of Blake Shelton’s most popular songs.
Blake Shelton’s Austin is not about Post Malone
Blake Shelton’s Austin doesn’t have any connection with Austin Richards Post, i.e., Post Malone, and talks about the dilemma of an untimely breakup. Written by lyricists Kristi Manna and David Kent, the song talks about a woman who craves her former lover Austin despite ending things with her on her terms.
Despite an amicable breakup, she feels like she lost a big chunk of her life and wants it back. The woman tries connecting with her lover via a phone call but ends up finding his voicemail. Amid a lot of unimportant things about bowling, a sold car, and others, the voicemail says:
“If you’re calling ’bout the car, I sold it/ If this is Tuesday night I’m bowling/ If you’ve got something to sell/ You’re wasting your time, I’m not buying/ If it’s anybody else, wait for the tone/ You know what to do/ And P.S. if this is Austin/ I still love you”
Initially, we think that the woman went to the city of Austin after the breakup. However, in the middle chorus of the song, she is addressed as Austin by the voice in the voicemail.
In the next paragraph, the woman is taken aback by the fact that her man is still in love with her and ends up confessing her love in the voicemail. The end of the song suggests that the two will eventually reconcile in the future.
“If you’re calling ’bout my heart, it’s still yours/ I should’ve listened to it a little more/ Then it wouldn’t have taken me so long/ To know where I belong/ And by the way, boy/ This is no machine you’re talking to/ Can’t you tell, this is Austin/ And I still love you/ I still love you.”
Austin remains to be one of Blake Shelton’s most iconic works even 15 years after its release. The song conquered the peak of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for five whole weeks and was even in the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Blake Shelton elaborated on working with Post Malone and raved about his obsession with his craft in the interview with the American Songwriter. The two have worked together on the song Pour Me A Drink from Post Malone’s upcoming album F-1 Trillionand the song is one of the first ones to have been released before the full album drops on August 16.
“As much time as I’ve spent with Post now, which is we spent about three days together since this thing’s been going on, those days have been unbelievable,” lauded Blake Shelton.
He continued:
“He’s just so excited about music. I mean, literally, we spent an hour one night him just with his iPod playing me music that he is fired up about. I still, to this day, have never asked him, ‘Hey, why me? Why did you call me for this?’”
Shelton finally said that he was proud to have worked with Post Malone and described him as an ‘incredibly talented guy.”
“Now that I’ve spent some time with him, it’s no mystery to me that he’s as huge as he is as an artist and successful as he is because he’s just somebody that you just love being around. He’s just so much fun,” continued Blake Shelton.
In the end, the 48-year-old predicted that Post Malone might have always wanted to work in the country music genre but life took him on a different tangent.
