Feeling the need for a different kind of speed? “Top Gun: Maverick” star Tom Cruise wants to do another sequel to a decades-old movie.

The Syracuse-born actor is talking to Paramount about a followup to his 1990 racing film, “Days of Thunder,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cruise played Cole Trickle, a NASCAR driver, opposite a cast that included Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Michael Rooker, Randy Quaid and John C. Reilly.

Cruise’s 2022 film, “Top Gun: Maverick,” was a huge box office success that saw him reprise his role as hot shot pilot Maverick from the 1986 blockbuster “Top Gun.” An insider said the studio is reaching out to potential writers about the “Days of Thunder” project, which could come after another “Top Gun” sequel.

“Thunder” wasn’t as big of a success as the original “Top Gun” but THR notes that racing films have become fashionable lately with recent flicks like “Ford v Ferrari,” “Gran Turismo” and next year’s “F1″ starring Brad Pitt. Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino also once said “Days of Thunder” is his favorite racing movie of all time.

“Yeah, yeah, you laugh, but seriously, I’m a big fan,” Tarantino said in 2013. “Sure, it had a big budget, big stars and a big director in Tony Scott, but it had the fun of those early [American International Picture racing] movies. I just don’t think [the genre] works if you take the whole thing too seriously.”

A plot, director and potential cast for “Days of Thunder 2” have not been announced. Kidman and Cruise got married after meeting on the set of the original film, but divorced in 2001. Duvall, 93, last acted in 2022′s “The Pale Blue Eye.”
