Wicked 2 will have a huge difference, Elphaba and Glinda breaking up at the end of Wicked is not an important point

The upcoming Wicked: For Good will be a drastically different movie from the first Wicked film, which could result in less favorable reviews. The first Wicked movie was a major success, becoming the highest-grossing stage musical adaptation of all time. Reviews for Wicked have been exceptional, and the film currently has an impressive score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes (via Rotten Tomatoes). Wicked’s reviews specifically applauded the dynamic between Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Ariana Grande-Butera’s Glinda. In addition to Erivo and Grande-Butera, the cast of Wicked includes Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.

While the first half of Wicked featured most of the characters studying together at Shiz University, the second half of the movie focused entirely on Elphaba and Glinda as they traveled to meet The Wizard of Oz. After the ending of Wicked, Elphaba, Glinda, and all the other characters will be split up in the upcoming Wicked: For Good. While it will be great to see all the characters receive further development in the highly-anticipated sequel, it is disappointing that Elphaba and Glinda will be split up for most of Wicked: For Good.

At the end of Wicked, Elphaba stole the Grimmerie and flew away from Emerald City, while Glinda stayed behind. The first Wicked film followed Act 1 of the musical quite closely, so it is likely that Wicked: For Good will faithfully adapt the second half. If this is the case, then Elphaba and Glinda will spend most of Wicked: For Good separatedWicked’s shocking twist reveals that The Wizard and Madame Morrible are actually the villains of the story, and are responsible for the cruelty towards animals. This twist leads to the separation of Elphaba and Glinda.

The reveal shatters both Elphaba and Glinda’s views of the world. While Elphaba’s first instinct is to rebel and fight against The Wizard and Madame Morrible, Glinda hesitates. This leads to them splitting up at the end of Wicked. In Act 2 of the musical, Elphaba flies around the world of Oz helping animals and actively leads a rebellion against The Wizard. Meanwhile, Glinda stays in Emerald City because she believes she can have more of an impact by working within the current system. Elphaba and Glinda’s positions in Wicked: For Good will highlight how they are drastically different characters.

The first Wicked film also spends a significant amount of time establishing that Elphaba and Glinda are nothing alike. Glinda is the most popular student in school who constantly wants to be the center of attention, whereas Elphaba is an outsider who scoffs at other people’s remarks. However, instead of splitting them further apart, like Wicked: For Good will do, the first Wicked film brings them closer together. At first, it is Glinda’s worst nightmare that she has to share a room with Elphaba, but they eventually end up becoming very good friends.

Wicked: For Good will showcase Glinda working within the system, as she always has, while Elphaba paves her own path and rebels against The Wizard.

They form a deep personal connection with each other in the first Wicked movie, which prompts Elphaba to invite Glinda to Emerald City to meet The Wizard. For the second half of Wickedit is a pleasure to watch Elphaba and Glinda share the screen, as it is clear how much they care for each other. However, their relationship is tested when the true motivations of The Wizard and Madame Morrible are revealed. Wicked: For Good will showcase Glinda working within the system, as she always has, while Elphaba paves her own path and rebels against The Wizard.
