Ancient seeds buried under thick Arctic ice for 32,000 years miraculously germinate and flower, what’s the secret?

Scientists are studying how an Arctic tree revived from seeds buried 32,000 years ago in thick ice.

Sky News reported that Silene Stenophylla is a white flowering plant originating from Siberia, which was revived from 32,000-year-old seeds by scientists Svetlana Yashina and David Gilichinsky from the Russian Academy of Sciences. The information was published in the journal American Academy of Sciences.

These plant seeds were found 38 meters below permafrost and were regenerated in glass jars under controlled light and temperature conditions. Now, Austrian scientists are trying to map the genome of this ancient plant, Silene stenophylla, to determine how long its seeds can survive.

Professor Margit Laimer, a plant biotechnologist at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, Austria, said that the frozen land in Russia is melting, thanks to which she and her colleagues can now be further researched.

The researchers wanted to find out whether there are changes in plant genes that can adapt to very dry, hot, or cold conditions, which could be useful in helping to cope with climate change.
“I think humanity needs to be grateful for any knowledge we can find to protect arable lands,” Professor Laimer said.
