A “masterpiece” romantic comedy film originally released in 2008 has already flown up the top 10 chart days after being added to Netflix.

The star-studded crowd-pleaser was a huge hit at the box office over a decade and a half ago and, years later, millions of fans continue to hold it up as a classic of the genre.

Katherine Heigl stars in 27 Dresses as Jane Nichols, a young woman who has been a bridesmaid on 27 separate occasions, but has been unlucky in love herself.

When her sister, Tess (played by Malin Åkerman), announces she’s engaged to the man Jane has harboured secret feelings towards for years, she reluctantly agrees to plan their wedding, not expecting to find love herself in the process.

Also starring James Marsden, Judy Greer, and Edward Burns, the film was added to the streaming service last Friday and quickly proved a hit with subscribers over the weekend. It’s currently sitting at the fifth position on Netflix’s film chart, beating out other popular titles such as KPop Demon Hunters and The Fall Guy.

One fan raved in a 10/10 review on IMDb: “Favourite movie. Cured my depression. Absolute classic. The bar scene is unmatched. A masterpiece honestly. Kevin is sexy. I watched it 3 times today.”

A rom-com sceptic admitted they were “proved wrong by my girlfriend when refusing to watch this movie thinking it would be another lame corny romance.

“However, it turned out to be a great movie that I really enjoyed watching from start to finish.

“This is the kind of upbeat, joyous nonsense that you can watch hundreds of times over just to savor the best scenes,” someone else agreed, calling it a “terrific rom-com”.

The praise continued on Letterboxd, where one user exclaimed: “WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MOVIE OMG, I truly didn’t expect it. I don’t know how I left it on my watchlist for so long, one of my new favorite romcoms.”

Someone else said: “One of the best romcoms I’ve ever seen. People need to start making films like this again.”

“What kind of person would I be for rating this anything less than 4 stars considering how many iconic scenes are in this?” another user wrote.

And a final fan gushed: “I used to love this film so much and it still stands as one of the best romcoms ever. The plot is paced so well with some cute moments and some that make you want to rip your eyes out in terms of second hand embarrassment and awkwardness. The drama is so real here.

“AND IT HAS A MONTAGE, so you know it is good! The Benny and the Jets scene is also so fun and is engraved into my mind, probably because both of the actors are stunning and I would marry both of them.”
